A big thank you to Eric for donating a belt sander to Kunjur.

This equipment will be a great addition to our programs and will help participants work on sanding and shaping artifacts such as boomerangs, clap sticks, and other wooden projects. Having the right tools allows us to safely and efficiently prepare materials, develop practical skills, and complete quality projects.

Donations like this help us continue running hands-on activities through our Connect Program and Rise Up Program. Every contribution makes a difference and helps us provide more opportunities for the men who participate in our programs.

Thank you again, Eric, for your generous support. It is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use.

Deadly day out on Country with the men.

Today we headed into the mangroves together, sharing knowledge, culture, and good yarns while searching for mud mussels, longbums, and crabs. The fellas had the opportunity to learn traditional ways of finding bush tucker, reading the signs in the mangroves, and understanding where to look for a good feed.

More importantly, it was a chance to spend time together, strengthen connections, and pass on knowledge from one generation to the next. There were plenty of laughs, stories, and learning throughout the day, reminding us of the importance of culture, Country, and community.

Days like these are about more than just gathering foodโ€”they're about keeping culture strong, building relationships, and creating positive experiences for our men.

- Certificate 4 in Mental Health Training with Gallang Place -

At Kunjur we believe that self-development is an important part of being able to effectively support the men in our community.

By continuing to build our knowledge, skills, and understanding, we strengthen our ability to walk alongside our men, provide guidance, and create positive outcomes for individuals, families, and the wider community. Investing in our own growth allows us to be better role models, stronger leaders, and more effective support workers.

When we take the time to develop ourselves, we are better equipped to empower others, promote wellbeing, and help our men reach their full potential. Together, we continue to learn, grow, and create stronger communities for future generations.

๐Ÿฅพ๐ŸŒฟ Today we took the young men from the Connect Program up the Red Arrow Track for a healthy and active day outdoors.

The walk provided an opportunity to get some exercise, enjoy the natural surroundings, and have positive conversations along the way. Activities like this help promote physical health, mental wellbeing, and encourage healthy lifestyle choices.

It was great to spend time together on the track, supporting one another and showing the young men different ways they can stay active while connecting with the outdoors.

A deadly day of exercise, connection, and wellbeing. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒฟ

Happy Mabo Day ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ–ค

Today we honour the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, a proud Torres Strait Islander and a true champion for justice. His courage and determination helped overturn terra nullius and pave the way for the recognition of Native Title in Australia.

We remember his strength, his vision, and his unwavering connection to Country. His legacy lives on in the ongoing fight for land rights and justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Thank you, Eddie Mabo, we walk forward because of you.

Happy Mabo Day! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ–ค

Eddie Koiki Mabo will always be remembered as a true Australian hero, a fighter for justice and an extremely proud Torres Strait Islander. His contribution in defeating the lie that Australia was โ€œTerra Nulliusโ€ or no-oneโ€™s land before the arrival of Captain Cook is one of the greatest contributions by any Australian, Indigenous or non-Indigenous.

Eddie knew that his people where the rightful owners of their Ancestral lands. While working in Townsville, Eddie was horrified to hear from a friend that the government claimed ownership all of the islands of the Torres Strait. He and his fellow plaintiffs set about proving that each family on Mer Island had clearly marked land boundaries and fish traps that had been passed on down through generation after generation which clearly demonstrated ownership.

While the struggles for land rights continues today, Eddie Maboโ€™s 10 year battle in the Federal court was a true David and Goliath battle in which right defeated might.

Sadly, on 21 January 1992, nearly ten years after beginning his legal claim in the High Court of Australia, Eddie Koiki Mabo passed away from cancer aged just fifty-six. He passed away without knowing the legacy that his hard work left behind.

34 years ago today, on June 3, 1992, the High Court of Australia decided in favour of Eddie Koiki Mabo and his fellow plaintiffs. The ruling on this landmark case recognised in Australian law for the first time the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to their lands based on their traditional connection to, and occupation of, their Country; a decision that countered the claim by the British that Australia was โ€˜terra nulliusโ€™ or land belonging to no-one.

The following year the Parliament of Australia passed the Native Title Act to create a system for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to make native title claims over their lands.

Today, we join with all Australians to recognise Eddie Maboโ€™s fight for justice and to say thank you for his inspirational leadership, resilience and deep connection with his cultural heritage.

We all owe Eddie Koiki Mabo a huge debt of gratitude. Mabo's legacy will always live on...
