Check out this enhanced version of a photo of Buninyong's main street, taken more than 120 years ago!

This remarkable photograph, which comes from the State Library Victoria, and was recently shared to Loving Ballarat group, captures the township around the turn of the century, offering a fascinating glimpse into a very different era.

Dirt roads stretch across the foreground, grand historic buildings line the street, and the iconic clock tower rises proudly above the town, much as it still does today.

There are no traffic lights, no modern vehicles and none of the hustle and bustle we're used to seeing. Instead, it's a snapshot of a growing Victorian community built on hard work, optimism and local pride.

What makes images like this so special is knowing that generations of families have lived, worked and shared their lives in these very streets.

While much has changed over the decades, many of the landmarks that give Buninyong its unique character remain standing as a link between past and present.

A beautiful reminder that today's history was yesterday's everyday life! 📸

A massive wind turbine blade has snapped high above the ground at the Lal Lal Wind Farm south of Ballarat, after nearby residents reported hearing loud explosion sounds early yesterday morning.

The incident happened just before 7am near Yendon-Egerton Road, with locals describing two loud bangs before spotting the damaged turbine.

The cause remains unknown, but the incident is already raising fresh concerns about the safety and reliability of large-scale wind infrastructure in regional areas.

WorkSafe inspectors have attended the site and are making inquiries. It is also not the first blade failure at the wind farm, with another turbine blade destroyed during a lightning strike in 2019.

A woman tragically lost her life in a crash near Buninyong yesterday evening in another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly things can change on our roads. 😔

Emergency services were called to Buninyong-Mount Mercer Road about 7.50pm after reports a white Toyota had lost control and crashed while travelling south-east.

The driver, a 55-year-old local woman from Buninyong, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and sadly died at the scene.

Ballarat Highway Patrol officers are now investigating exactly what led to the crash, with the circumstances still unclear.

It’s a tough one to take, especially for a tight-knit community like Buninyong, where news like this hits close to home.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and everyone in the Buninyong community doing it tough today. Take care of each other. ❤️

The Buninyong Blueberry Farm has wrapped up another successful morning of picking, with strong local support and plenty of berries heading home with happy visitors! 🫐

The farm thanked everyone who came along, saying it was great to see familiar faces back again, while also welcoming people visiting for the first time. 👋🏻

With clear weather and good conditions earlier in the day, it made for a relaxed and productive morning on the farm. ☀️

However, with hotter weather setting in, they confirmed there will be no picking sessions over the next couple of days, citing the heat as making conditions unsuitable. 🥵

They will post an update later this week with details of upcoming sessions once temperatures ease, encouraging people to keep an eye out for announcements. 📢

Two years after surviving a horrific assault while running in the Lal Lal State Forest – just south-east of Ballarat – Sissy Austin finally got to thank the ambo who helped her through the worst day of her life. 🙏🏻‍

When Sissy – a proud Gunditjmara, Keerray Woorroong and Djap Wurrung woman – asked paramedic Jack Shaw whose country they were on, he simply said, “Wadawurrung Country.” 🟡

In that moment – bleeding, shaken, and terrified – those words became her anchor. It wasn’t just a gesture. It was recognition, connection, and care when everything else around her felt shattered. ☺️

For Sissy, a moment of healing and closure. For Jack, a rare chance to see the impact of kindness in action – to learn how a small exchange on the side of a country road became part of someone’s recovery. ❤️

Since that day, Sissy has gone from survivor to advocate. Through her Take Back the Track initiative, she’s fought for safer running spaces and inspired countless others with her strength and resilience. 💪🏻

She’s even run marathons around the world, proving that courage isn’t about never falling – it’s about standing up again. Even in the worst moments, humanity can still shine through. 💛

It was an absolutely gut-wrenching scene out at Lal Lal – just south-east of Ballarat – on Friday morning, where a car slammed into a tree along Yendon-Lal Lal Road at around 10:30am.

Tragically, the male driver died at the scene – no chance to save him. Police, meanwhile, were working to figure out what happened.

Our deepest thoughts go out to his family, mates, and anyone who knew him. One moment on the road, and suddenly a life’s just gone. Truly heartbreaking. 💔

Police are reportedly still investigating, so if you saw anything, or were in the area, don’t stay quiet. Every bit helps.

Just after midnight yesterday, firefighters from the Buninyong-Mount Helen Fire Brigade were called out to something no one should ever have to see – a car on fire inside the Buninyong Cemetery.

With help from Fire Rescue Victoria, crews managed to get the flames under control – but the damage was done.

And this wasn’t just some mechanical mishap. Victoria Police attended the scene and are now investigating under suspicious circumstances.

The brigade didn’t hold back in their statement, either.

“We are appalled that someone would engage in such disrespectful behaviour within the grounds of the local cemetery,” they wrote.

“The disgraceful actions of those responsible will have caused distress to families across the district.”

But what makes this even more gut-wrenching? The fire was right near the grave of one of their own – Connor Prunty, a local firefighter who tragically died from cancer in 2022.

And if that’s not enough to make your blood boil – one of the responders on scene was Connor’s younger brother, Tom.

Imagine that. Called out to a fire next to your own brother’s resting place – because some absolute lowlife decided to torch a car in a bloody cemetery.

No family should have to deal with this. No brigade should have to put out flames on sacred ground. And no town should have to tolerate this kind of filth.

Whoever’s behind this – you’ve not just set a car on fire. You’ve disrespected the dead, shattered a community’s peace, and poured pain onto a family still grieving.
