6 DAYS TO GO. So, why Ovarian Cancer Australia?

Like many, before ovarian cancer impacted our family, it was a disease we knew very little about. When we heard the name we probably even confused it with cervical cancer and thought that there was a vaccine and a screening process in place.

What we know now is that ovarian cancer truly is the silent killer and we need to improve outcomes for women who get it.

- While there are warning signs to be aware of, most of them could relate to numerous conditions.
- A reliable screening test that alerts women much earlier in the progression of the disease is badly needed.

Even though it has been over 3 years since we lost my mother-in-law to the disease, we continue to see the great work OCA does in supporting women with ovarian cancer and their families.

But like the team at OCA, what we really want to see is breakthrough research that will change the story for more women and their families.

And that costs money.

So that's why I am asking for your support. I will do my bit next week over the course of about 10-12 hours on a rowing machine, but you can help right now at the link in the comments.

I am not asking for huge donations. Even $5 or $10 helps 🙂

Thank you also to World Gym Bundaberg and Regional Business HQ for your support.

Training: Did a 25km / 2 hour session this afternoon. Felt pretty good afterwards. I won't row now until next Saturday - probably just walking this week.

Q & A How do I fuel my body for a challenge like this?

This is not the time for counting calories or macros that's for sure. It's about energy in and energy out, fluid in and fluid out, and electrolytes to keep the body in balance and functioning.

I have tried and tested a few different things during the long sessions I've done.

Worst result - just water and a banana. Tanked at about the 31km mark and felt like it was unsafe to continue.

Best result - honey and peanut butter sandwiches (2 squares per hour for the first two hours), Powerade at 750ml per hour, sports gels (half packet every half hour from third hour), and black glucose jelly beans as little 'whenever' snacks. Got to 63km and could have kept going but left it at a marathon plus half-marathon distance.

For the big day I will add in a bit more solid food and a good old bottle of full sugar Coke at some stage. Oh, and the night before? Pad thai or a big bowl of pasta then just a couple of slices of toast for breakfast.

Q & A

Am I getting regular health checks before I attempt this challenge?

Absolutely. Actually I've made it a point to get heart checks and a full set of bloods on a regular basis since I began working on my fitness three years ago.

Most recently I checked in with my GP the morning after a marathon evening rowing session a few weeks ago. Heart sounded all good and blood pressure was pretty good at 118/76.
