Another exciting milestone achieved with council endorsing further sand studies for the artifical reef!
Combined with an overall sand movement study of the Back Beach as part of the city’s CHRMAP work, the artificial reef will be included in the scope and results shared between both parties.
Council also voted for city officers to work collaboratively with the BAR committee to ensure the success of the project.

Unfortunately scheduling didn’t allow us to represent our Bunbury reef project in person at the WSCC2026 event. Great to be acknowledged by the event organizers for our reef project so far and from all reports the event was an absolute raving success!

The BAR committee have recently had the pleasure of hosting Dr Dave Revell of US coastal research company Integral Corp, to show off the beauty our Bunbury coastline as well as much of the South West’s great coastal destinations. Dave has said that the South West of Western Australia reminds him of California before man made projects caused environmental problems. David brings to our project the science to support Waveco’s ASR design concepts.
Dave has had the opportunity to meet many of the projects stake holders on his short but productive visit whilst also taking a more in depth look at the Bunbury Back Beach and surrounding infrastructure.
We wish him all the best in his travels back home and look forward to working closely with his company as the project progresses.

⁩Next week we are pleased to welcome to Bunbury Dr David Revell, principal coastal scientist at Integral Consulting in California as part of the ongoing development of the Bunbury Artificial Reef. Dave will be in town to visit the proposed site and talk about the study process and design in depth.
David brings extensive experience in coastal management and reef design and his visit provides a valuable opportunity to draw on his international expertise as we refine the technical and environmental aspects of the project. His advice will help ensure the reef design delivers long-term benefits for marine habitat, surfing, coastal protection and the wider Bunbury community.
We look forward to working closely with David and Integral Consulting as we progress this exciting initiative and continue to apply best-practice design principles to the Bunbury Artificial Reef project.

The rather enjoyable process ofconstructing the first scale model and scanning to obtain the first 3D file is complete. We are now working on creating the very first computer wave modelling sequences to show wave characteristic, peel and ride length. Making sure the wave created is of the absolute highest quality for all surfing skill levels is vital to the design process. Watch this space for more updates. We’re thrilled to share that Minister Don Punch MLA recently met with the Bunbury Artificial Surf Reef Committee to discuss the future of this transformative coastal project. Minister Punch is very supportive of the concept and has actually been involved in previous investigations of artificial reefs in Bunbury.
It was evident there is strong alignment between the Committee’s > vision and the Minister’s commitment to enhancing regional resilience, tourism, investment and community wellbeing. Minister Punch was updated on the reef’s potential to: ✅ Improve surf conditions for all skill levels ✅ Protect our coastline from erosion ✅ Boost marine biodiversity ✅ Drive local economic growth through stimulating CBD investment, tourism, coastal development and recreation.
The Committee presented the latest design updates and community engagement outcomes, reaffirming their dedication to creating a world-class surf reef that benefits Bunbury for generations to come.
Minister Punch was keen to see the formal arrangement with the City of Bunbury finalised for this Project as the next step and would further assist with advising on potential funding pathways when this is in place.
