Council Proposed Changes to Laneways

Byron Shire Council are proposing the following changes to laneways in Brunswick Heads.
• No Stopping to both sides (short term)
• Change from two-way to one-way (longer term)
• Reduced speed limit (longer term)

The proposed changes would apply to the following lanes - Mona Lane, Veterans Lane, Balun Lane, Slessor Lane, Shapcott Lane, Ring Lane, Whittall Lane, Galleon Lane, Nelson Lane and the west end of Fawcett Street.

Council are requesting feedback from residents by 31st January which can be emailed to [email protected]

The Progress Association would also be interested to hear feedback from residents before 31st January (either in the comments section below or by email at [email protected]) to inform our submission to council.

If you are in favour of making the lanes one-way we suggest you also advise council which direction you think the laneways should run, bearing in mind the potential for increased traffic turning onto and off of on Tweed Street and other potential constraints.

In the comments section we have included the letter from Council that most residents should have received via their letterboxes.

LOCK IT UP & LIGHT IT UP

This is the advice received from senior police in relation to ongoing property crime and car thefts in Brunswick Heads. Yesterday, members of the Brunswick Heads Progress Association, Councillor Janet Swain and concerned community members meet with senior police from the Tweed Byron Command to discuss what we as a community can do in relation to ongoing property crime and how we can support the police. This is what we learnt:

The crime is opportunistic. The perpetrators are juveniles from outside of our area. Please keep your cars and homes locked, and car keys and other valuables out of plain sight. Incidents of forced entry are very low. We have a reputation as a town that doesn’t lock up and this makes us a target (Let’s change this!). If you home is difficult to access thieves will move on.

Outdoor sensor lights that light up as someone approaches your home in the night are a major deterrent. Solar powered DYI types can be purchased from around $60.

If you are aware of a crime in real time please call 000. If you realise after the event please call 131444 and request a police officer to attend your premises so that you can report a crime. You can also report a crime online via the NSW Police Force Community Portal (link in the comments).

When reporting a crime please ensure you get an incident number as this helps with follow-up inquiries. Please report all crimes however minor and also make a written statement. This is VERY helpful for police. Three perpetrators have been arrested recently in relation to car thefts in Brunswick Heads.

Please do not confront or chase any persons who enter your property. Cars and phones can be replaced. Your life cannot.

Mark Turner, a long term well respected detective from Byron Bay has been appointed as the Lock-Up Keeper for Brunswick Heads Police Station and will commence in February.

It was agreed that regular meetings will be held between Acting Inspector Donna Tutt, OIC Byron Police Station and a designated community member in order to keep both police and the community informed about police matters in our area.

Thank you to Byron Shire Council and Reflections for this great joint effort.

In a joint, $20,000 project between Byron Shire Council and Reflections, the lighting along Simpsons Creek at Brunswick Heads has been replaced. 28 new, solar-powered lights have been installed along the footpath from The Terrace to the bowling club.

Great to see this done. Thank you to council staff. Let's all give this part of the creek bank a wide berth so it can repair itself properly.

😀A badly eroded section of Simpsons Creek near the Brunswick Heads Bowling Club has been fixed.

The section of creek is popular with locals and visitors and while the bank had been steadily eroding over a long period of time, the situation worsened in recent months.

Contractors this week filled the washout with sand and compacted it, mindful of not damaging nearby tree roots.

There are a lot of considerations when working on a project like this because of the sensitive marine environment. It’s not just a case of filling in the eroded section, we needed to make it as strong as possible otherwise the damage will most likely reoccur.

Native grasses and other species have been planted and the area fenced off to allow the bank to stabilise and the plants to take hold.

With the help of the Brunswick Heads Progress Association, large rocks have been sourced and will be used to create a car park, so people don’t drive too close to the creek bank.

The footpath is also being repaired and the damaged lighting replaced.
