“God is not some remote highest being, forever inaccessible. He is very close to us; we can call to him; we can always reach him. He has time for me, so much time that he lay as a man in the crib and remains a man for all eternity.” -Pope Benedict XVI

Merry Christmas from Con-solatio! We wish you a joyful celebration of the closeness and humility of God.

“Let not your heart be disturbed.
Am I not here, who is your Mother?
Are you not under my protection?
Am I not your health?
Are you not happily within my fold?
What else do you wish?
Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything!”

Happy feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe! We entrust all our missionaries and those the serve to her maternal care.

Ever wonder where Con-solatio got its name?

“The true measure of humanity is essentially determined in relationship to suffering and to the sufferer. This holds true both for the individual and for society. (…) To accept the “other” who suffers, means that I take up his suffering in such a way that it becomes mine also. Because it has now become a shared suffering, though, in which another person is present, this suffering is penetrated by the light of love. The Latin word con-solatio, “consolation”, expresses this beautifully. It suggests being with the other in his solitude, so that it ceases to be solitude.” -Spe Salvi, Benedict XVI

Give a year to Christ and offer the consolation of a simple presence to those who suffer.

What does our prayer life consist of on mission?

📕 Liturgy of the Hours - Morning and evening, we enter into the common prayer of the universal Church to offer praise and intercession.
✴️ Eucharistic Adoration - Each day, we learn to contemplate Christ who comes to meet us throughout our day.
⛪️ Daily Mass - We offer up the joy and sorrows of our friends in the neighborhood and receive His Presence.
📿 Rosary - Evey afternoon, we entrust our mission to Mary and ask her to guide us towards those most in need of her Son’s mercy.
🙏 Silent Retreat - Every month, we enter the “desert” for a day, to simply be with Christ and rest in His love.

Prayer is heartbeat of our life. Con-solatio missionaries are first seekers of God. We want to be filled with Him in order to carry His love our into our neighborhoods and streets. Without prayer, we are nothing!

“Walter lives in his workshop where he fixes broken machinery. His home is brimming with old washing machines, wheels, welding equipment, and every bolt and screw you can imagine. But hidden inside this clutter is a precious gem, Ricardo. Walter took Ricardo into his home after he had a life-altering stroke 10 years ago. Since then, Ricardo has been bed-ridden. You would think that Walter and Ricardo are brothers, or at least cousins, based on how attentively Walter cares for Ricardo. But no. These two men are simply childhood friends, one who took in the other in his great need. And not only did Walter offer Ricardo a place to stay, but true care: making him food three times a day, changing his diapers, giving him medicine, and keeping him company. Every time we visit Walter and Ricardo it is a great gift to witness their friendship.” - Lucy, on mission in Perú.

Welcome to mission! This month, Agnes began 14 months of mission in El Salvador, and Rebecca arrived for 18 months in Costa Rica! Their communities were waiting to welcome them with open arms and to introduce them to their new “Promised Land” - the streets, neighborhoods, culture, language, apostolates, and hearts where Christ wait to meet them. Keep them in your prayers as they transition into life on mission, and embrace this “kindergarten of love.”

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Happy Feast of Saint Teresa of Calcutta! Her love for Christ in the poor, and the clarity with which she recognized the suffering of the lonely and forgotten, keep her friendship and intercession very close to our missionaries.

“Hungry for love, He looks at you. Thirsty for kindness, He begs of you. Naked for loyalty, He hopes in you. Homeless for the shelter of your heart, He asks of you. Will you be that one to Him?”

“Since I arrived, Abadou frequently misbehaves and then blames it on someone else. I observe now, nine months later, that this has not changed. What has changed, however, is the way I see him. The first few months here, every time he called my name on the street to talk, before he even started to share or ask a question, I thought about whatever senseless thing he’d done the day before and how much it frustrated me. I couldn’t see that he was just a boy who wanted to play and didn’t know the right way to do it. I couldn’t see him as a boy who is seen and adored by God, both before and after he acts up. I, too, then, if I am to love like Christ, must first see that which is worth adoring, both before and after he acts up. I also must see that I, too, am that boy. Please pray for me.” Sam, on mission in Senegal

Lorenza, on mission in Peru: “I just want to see your Face.” It became part of my prayer, inspired by a verse in one of my favorite psalms: “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God?” (Ps 42:2). In the midst of the suffering we see in the barrio, I realized, thanks to the Holy Spirit, that I get to see His Face every single day. In a split second, the faces of different mission friends came to mind. Of course! I behold the Face of God in every single one of our friends.

Sofia on mission in Brazil: “During this time, I’ve also seen how the mission goes far beyond me through my fellow missionaries. Laura, Agnieszka, and Taymara have been an enormous gift to me. Every day, I learn from them, and we get to know each other better. We have moments of laughter, disagreements, and reconciliation. None of us are here for ourselves; we’re all searching for a greater Love, and that unites us in a distinct and profound way. I’m deeply grateful to have them because I know I wouldn’t be able to do anything we do if I were alone. They take care of what I can’t, know things I don’t, and we complement each other, help each other, and thus we manage to bring our presence and love to our friends.”

Community life is one of the pillars of our life on mission, shared with international team members that become family. It provides support, it enriches us, it helps us grow in love and mercy, and it reminds us that we’re not here for our own personal project - we are here to serve Someone greater, together.
