🌺🐦 HONEYEATERS — OUR WINTER GARDEN IS ALIVE WITH THEM! 🐦🌺

Our property is absolutely inundated with honeyeaters at the moment, with at least 8 different species onsite while hundreds of our red and white Grevillea banksii flowers are in full bloom. 🌿🌺

The Noisy Friarbirds (Philemon corniculatus) are particularly lively — filling the garden with their loud, rambunctious calls as they feast on the copious nectar flowing from the grevillea flowers. It’s a wonderful example of native plants providing abundant seasonal food for native wildlife. 🐦🌸

As winter gives way to spring, Girraween National Park’s spectacular granite landscape begins bursting into colour — and September and October are prime months to experience its remarkable native wildflowers. 🌸🪨

🌼 THE “PLACE OF FLOWERS” — Girraween is a name associated with “place of flowers”, and it certainly earns it. The park supports hundreds of native plant species, while more than 900 flowering plant species have been recorded across the wider Granite Belt. 💚💛

🌸 WHAT TO LOOK FOR — Wattles, colourful pea flowers, paper daisies, heaths, trigger plants, billy buttons, granite bluebells, Native Sarsaparilla (Hardenbergia violacea), boronias and beautiful native orchids can all feature in the spring display. 🌼💜

🪨 GRANITE + BIODIVERSITY — Rocky outcrops, sandy soils, creek margins, woodlands and sheltered crevices create an extraordinary variety of habitats — and you don’t need a huge hike to enjoy them. Wonderful wildflowers can be found around Bald Rock Creek and shorter walks near the day-use areas. 🌿🥾

Australia is home to over 1,700 known native bee species — and unlike European honey bees, most are solitary, nesting in soil, timber, stems and natural cavities. 🇦🇺🐝🌿

🏡 NO HIVE REQUIRED — Only a small number of our native bees are social, stingless species. Australia’s incredible diversity ranges from tiny solitary bees to Blue-banded Bees, Teddy Bear Bees and large Carpenter Bees. 🐝💙

🍅 BUZZ POLLINATORS — Blue-banded Bees (Amegilla spp.) vibrate flowers to release pollen, making them excellent pollinators of plants such as tomatoes and blueberries. 💙🐝🍅

🥭 POLLINATING OUR FOOD — Native stingless bees also visit crops including macadamias, mangoes, lychees and watermelons, adding valuable pollination alongside other insects. 🌰🥭🍉

As late winter begins giving way to spring, Australia’s wattles burst into brilliant gold — and the fresh flowers of suitable edible Acacia species can be used to make a delicate, fragrant herbal infusion. 🌼☕🇦🇺

🌼 FROM BLOSSOM TO BREW — Fresh wattle flowers can produce a subtle, lightly sweet infusion with gentle honey-floral and green, tea-like notes. Always positively identify the species first and only harvest from clean, chemical-free locations away from polluted roadsides. 🌿🔍💛

☕ HOW TO BREW IT — Gently shake and rinse the blossoms, then add around 1–2 teaspoons of fresh flowers per cup. Pour over hot water just off the boil, cover and steep for 3–5 minutes, then strain through a fine mesh strainer. Simple, seasonal and beautifully Australian. 🌼💧☕

⚠️ HARVEST WITH CARE — Australia has a huge diversity of Acacia species, so never assume every wattle is suitable for consumption. Correct identification is essential. People with significant pollen allergies should also be cautious with flower infusions and avoid experimenting if unsure. 🌿⚠️🌼

Had a great day travelling through the Southern Downs to meet some new Flora 4 Fauna friends and conduct a Bushfood & Biodiversity Consultation on their beautiful 200+ acre property. 🌿🏡💚

🌼 LATE WINTER IN BLOOM — Golden wattles and late-winter wildflowers are bursting into flower, signalling the seasonal change ahead. 💛🌼☀️

🐦 WILDLIFE HIGHLIGHTS — Spotting a Mistletoebird and Yellow-rumped Thornbill was a highlight, alongside other birds taking advantage of the flowering native vegetation. 🐦🌳🌿

🌱 BUSH MEDICINES IN BLOOM — Gumbi Gumbi and Native Sarsaparilla were flowering too, highlighting the connections between useful native plants, pollinators, wildlife and healthy ecosystems. 🌸🐝🦋

🔎 FROM INSPIRATION TO ACTION — Our new clients first met us at our recent Bushfood & Biodiversity event in Blackbutt and are now looking at how they can enhance biodiversity across their own property. With 200+ acres, there’s enormous potential for natural regeneration, wildlife habitat, bushfoods and a more resilient landscape. 🌏🌱🦎

Spring is almost here, and what you do now can help prepare your native plants for warmer weather, new growth, flowering and the return of increased wildlife activity! 🌱☀️

🌿 TIDY — BUT NOT TOO MUCH! Remove weeds, but leave some leaf litter, logs and natural debris. What looks untidy to us can be valuable habitat for insects, lizards and other wildlife. 🦎🐞

✂️ PRUNE WITH PURPOSE Lightly prune suitable natives to encourage fresh growth and flowering — but always check for nesting birds and other wildlife first. 🐦🌿

🌱 PLANT FOR BIODIVERSITY Add locally native plants with different heights, flowering seasons and forms. Greater plant diversity means more opportunities for wildlife to find food, shelter and nesting habitat. 🌼🦋

🐔 FEED YOUR GARDEN Apply organic pelletised chicken manure or well-composted cow manure where appropriate. We recommend avoiding horse, pig and sheep manure in native gardens. 🌱🐄

🌧️ MAKE EVERY DROP COUNT! Apply an environmentally friendly soil wetter to help incoming rain pe*****te water-repellent soils and reach deeper into the soil profile — where plant roots need that moisture most. 💧🌱

🍂 MULCH, MULCH, MULCH! Top up mulch before the heat arrives to conserve moisture, protect roots, moderate soil temperatures and support healthy soil biology. 🍄🌿

Across Australia, winter isn't necessarily a season of dormancy—it's a season of preparation. While many people think the bush is asleep, native wattles, grevilleas, eucalypts, banksias, hakeas, melaleucas and many other remarkable plants are already flowering, providing essential nectar and pollen when food is scarce. 🌼🐝
