✠ THE WORD FOR TODAY
There is a profound difference between possessing something and being entrusted with its care.
Possession suggests ownership.
Stewardship implies responsibility.
The owner may be tempted to ask, “What can I gain from this?”
The faithful steward asks, “How may I preserve, strengthen and faithfully administer what has been placed in my care?”
This distinction lies at the heart of Christian leadership, charitable service and the vocation of Christian chivalry.
Throughout Scripture, we are reminded that our abilities, resources, opportunities and responsibilities are gifts for which we must ultimately give account.
Our time is entrusted.
Our influence is entrusted.
Our talents are entrusted.
Our relationships are entrusted.
Our opportunities to serve are entrusted.
And when we accept responsibility within a Christian fraternity, the welfare of others is also entrusted to our care.
For the Christian Knight, stewardship is therefore not merely an administrative obligation.
It is a sacred expression of faithfulness to Christ.
As we enter the final eighteen days before our Australasian Convocation and Investiture, this truth deserves particular attention.
We are not preparing merely to celebrate the growth of an institution.
We are preparing to renew our commitment to something greater than ourselves.
A Christian vocation.
A fellowship of service.
A responsibility to those who will follow.
And an obligation to ensure that the Cross we bear is reflected in the integrity of our lives.
⚔️ THE TEMPLAR REFLECTION — THE KEEPER OF THE HOUSE
Imagine a medieval Templar commandery at the beginning of a new day.
The chapel bell sounds.
The brethren gather for prayer.
The steward examines the stores.
The commander reviews the responsibilities of the household.
The chaplain attends to spiritual duties.
Others prepare for the practical work required to sustain the community.
The life of such a house depended upon far more than courage in battle.
It required discipline.
Prayer.
Organisation.
Care of resources.
Mutual responsibility.
And fidelity to the obligations of religious life.
The romantic image of the mounted Knight often overshadows these quieter realities.
Yet without faithful stewardship, no community can endure.
The same principle applies to our contemporary Christian fraternity.
Our vocation is not sustained through ceremonial distinction alone.
It requires people willing to undertake ordinary responsibilities faithfully.
People who keep promises.
Maintain records.
Care for members.
Protect resources.
Prepare those who follow.
Support charitable work.
And place the common good above personal recognition.
The true strength of a Christian Order is found not merely in those who stand before the altar, but in those who faithfully serve when nobody is watching.
✠ THE CROSS IS A TRUST, NOT A POSSESSION
When a Knight or Dame receives the mantle, it is natural to experience a sense of honour.
The moment may be deeply meaningful.
It represents belonging, commitment and recognition within the fraternity.
Yet the Cross upon that mantle should never become a symbol of personal ownership over the ideals it represents.
We do not possess the Gospel.
We are called to live according to it.
We do not own Christian charity.
We are called to practise it.
We do not own the dignity of those we serve.
We are called to respect and protect it.
And we do not possess the heritage of Christian chivalry as something to be exploited for personal distinction.
We receive its lessons as a responsibility.
The contemporary Grand Priory of Australia draws inspiration from the Christian and chivalric traditions associated with the historical Knights Templar.
That inspiration brings an obligation to distinguish historical fact from romantic imagination and contemporary aspiration.
Our modern fraternity must establish its worth through its own Christian witness.
Through prayer.
Formation.
Fellowship.
Integrity.
And practical service.
The Cross does not become more honourable because we wear it. We honour its meaning when we live faithfully beneath it.
✠ THE FIRST TRUST — OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
Before we consider the responsibilities of office, membership or charitable work, we must consider our relationship with Christ.
The Christian Knight is first a disciple.
Everything else follows.
Our faith cannot be delegated to another person.
Our prayers cannot be replaced by ceremonial participation.
Our conscience cannot be surrendered to institutional loyalty.
Our responsibility to live according to the Gospel remains personal.
A Knight may attend every gathering and still neglect his spiritual life.
An officer may administer an organisation competently while failing to cultivate humility.
A member may possess considerable knowledge of tradition while remaining unfamiliar with the transforming demands of Christian discipleship.
This is why formation must continue throughout life.
We are not merely learning how to belong to an Order.
We are learning how to follow Christ more faithfully.
The first responsibility entrusted to every Christian Knight is the stewardship of his own spiritual life.
✠ THE SECOND TRUST — THE WELFARE OF OUR BRETHREN
Christian fraternity is not simply a collection of individuals sharing a common interest.
It is a relationship carrying mutual responsibilities.
We are called to encourage one another.
To provide support during hardship.
To welcome new members.
To respect differences.
To correct with charity.
To maintain confidentiality where appropriate.
And to ensure that those who experience difficulty are not forgotten.
Within the Grand Priory of Australia, member welfare must remain an important part of our organisational culture.
Some members may face illness.
Others may experience bereavement.
Some may struggle with personal responsibilities.
Others may feel isolated or uncertain about their place within the fraternity.
The faithful steward does not regard these circumstances as inconvenient distractions.
He recognises that people are more important than programmes.
A compassionate conversation may sometimes accomplish more than an impressive ceremony.
A thoughtful act of assistance may strengthen fraternity more than a formal declaration.
And a sincere word of encouragement may restore the confidence of someone who has quietly begun to withdraw.
We cannot claim to safeguard the honour of our Order while neglecting the wellbeing of those who comprise it.
✠ THE THIRD TRUST — RESPONSIBLE CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP
The recent Annual General Meeting of the Grand Priory of Australia provides a timely reminder of the responsibilities associated with office.
As elected and appointed Grand Officers begin their service for 2026–2027, the principle of stewardship should guide every aspect of their work.
The Grand Prior is entrusted with leadership and oversight.
The Grand Seneschal assists in executive coordination and the continuity of leadership.
The Grand Chancellor supports sound governance and institutional administration.
The Grand Secretary safeguards correspondence, records and administrative continuity.
The Grand Treasurer exercises responsibility for financial stewardship.
The Grand Marshal ensures appropriate ceremonial preparation and discipline.
The Grand Turcopolier contributes to the operational responsibilities entrusted to that office.
The Grand Hospitaller supports fellowship, hospitality, member functions and event organisation.
The Grand Almoner gives particular attention to member welfare and the coordination of compassionate and charitable assistance.
The Grand Chaplain General provides spiritual leadership and guidance within the Christian vocation of the fraternity.
Each office carries distinct responsibilities.
Yet every office serves the same fundamental purpose:
To strengthen the Christian mission of the Grand Priory and support the people entrusted to its care.
No office should exist merely to provide a title.
No responsibility should be exercised without accountability.
And no officer should regard the institution as an extension of personal authority.
The faithful steward understands that office is temporary, while the duty to serve remains enduring.
✠ THE FOURTH TRUST — THE RESOURCES OF CHARITY
The Knights Templar Foundation Incorporated carries a particularly solemn responsibility.
As an Australian registered charity and incorporated association, it must administer its affairs in accordance with its governing rules and applicable legal obligations.
Its resources are not personal possessions.
They are entrusted for charitable purposes.
Every donation represents generosity.
Every expenditure requires appropriate justification.
Every programme should be directed towards genuine public benefit.
Every commitment should be considered against available resources and organisational capacity.
And every report should distinguish clearly between aspirations, approved activities and demonstrated achievements.
Christian charity requires more than a compassionate heart.
It requires honest administration.
Careful planning.
Appropriate oversight.
Safeguarding.
Responsible financial management.
And respect for the people whose lives may be affected by our decisions.
The generosity of others creates a sacred responsibility to act with integrity.
✠ STEWARDSHIP AND THE PROTECTION OF THE VULNERABLE
The humanitarian and benevolent mission of the Knights Templar Foundation encompasses important areas of concern.
Human trafficking and exploitation.
Child safeguarding and prevention education.
Community hardship and benevolent relief.
Support for persecuted Christians.
And compassionate assistance to vulnerable individuals and communities.
These responsibilities require particular care.
The desire to protect must never become an excuse for reckless intervention.
Those affected by exploitation deserve safety, dignity, confidentiality and access to appropriately qualified support.
Children require safeguarding arrangements that place their wellbeing above organisational reputation.
People experiencing hardship deserve assistance that respects their dignity and does not impose inappropriate conditions.
Charitable initiatives must be developed responsibly, with suitable partnerships, competent oversight and lawful reporting pathways.
Some programmes will require further development before they can be delivered effectively.
That is part of responsible stewardship.
We must resist the temptation to confuse the announcement of an intention with the achievement of an outcome.
The faithful Christian steward promises carefully, acts responsibly and reports truthfully.
✠ THE FIFTH TRUST — THE FORMATION OF THOSE WHO FOLLOW
One of the most important responsibilities of any Christian fraternity is the formation of its future members.
The work of our Collegium Templi Christi should therefore be regarded as central to the life of the Grand Priory.
Christian formation is not simply the transmission of historical knowledge or ceremonial instruction.
It involves the development of character.
Understanding Scripture.
Cultivating prayer.
Learning the principles of Christian ethics.
Understanding the responsibilities of membership.
Developing respect for ecclesiastical and civil authority.
Practising humility.
And learning how Christian chivalry may be expressed responsibly in contemporary society.
The postulant should be encouraged to ask questions.
To examine motives.
To seek spiritual guidance.
To understand the obligations being accepted.
And to recognise that Investiture is not the conclusion of formation.
It is an important milestone within a continuing journey.
Those who mentor postulants are therefore entrusted with more than teaching information.
They are helping shape the future character of the fraternity.
The quality of our future Order will depend in no small measure upon the care with which we form its members today.
✠ 18 DAYS TO CONVOCATION — PREPARING TO RECEIVE AND RENEW THE TRUST
On Saturday, 7 November 2026, the Grand Priory of Australia — Ordre du Temple de Jérusalem will gather for the Australasian Convocation and Investiture.

Only eighteen days remain.
Our preparations now enter an increasingly significant stage.
The ceremonial arrangements must be completed.
Our postulants must be supported.
Our officers must fulfil their responsibilities.
Our clergy must be afforded appropriate preparation.
Our visitors must be welcomed.
And our members must approach the occasion with sincere Christian purpose.
But there is another responsibility.
One that cannot be fulfilled through administrative efficiency alone.
We must prepare ourselves spiritually to receive or renew the trust represented by the Cross.
The approaching Investiture is not merely an occasion of recognition.
It is an opportunity to consider what Christian service will require of us in the months and years ahead.
✠ FOR THOSE APPROACHING INVESTITURE
If you are preparing to receive the accolade, reflect upon the word faithfulness.
Not prestige.
Not recognition.
Not distinction.
Faithfulness.
Will you remain faithful in prayer?
Faithful in Christian worship?
Faithful in your commitments?
Faithful in service?
Faithful in your treatment of others?
Faithful in your responsibilities to family and community?
Faithful when the enthusiasm of Investiture has passed?
Faithful when nobody is watching?
These questions are more important than the splendour of the ceremony.
For the mantle may be placed upon your shoulders in a moment.
But the responsibilities it represents must be carried throughout your life.
Do not prepare merely to receive an honour. Prepare to become a faithful steward of the obligations that accompany it.
✠ FOR THOSE ALREADY INVESTED
Those of us who already wear the mantle must also examine our stewardship.
Have we remained faithful to our commitments?
Have we strengthened the fraternity?
Have we encouraged new members?
Have we contributed to Christian service?
Have we exercised leadership responsibly?
Have we protected the dignity of others?
Have we remained humble?
Have we continued our formation?
Have we represented the Order with integrity?
The approaching Convocation provides an opportunity to renew our commitment.
Not because our previous promises have expired.
But because Christian faithfulness requires continual attention.
Every day offers another opportunity to honour the trust we have received.
✠ THE SIXTH TRUST — THE FUTURE OF THE GRAND PRIORY
We must also remember that the Grand Priory does not exist solely for those who currently hold membership or office.
It must be prepared for those who will follow.
This requires continuity.
Institutional records.
Responsible succession planning.
Sound governance.
Sustainable finances.
Clear policies.
Appropriate formation.
Effective communication.
And a culture in which responsibility is shared rather than concentrated unnecessarily.
A faithful steward does not merely ask whether the institution is functioning today.
He asks whether it is being strengthened for tomorrow.
Will future members inherit clear records?
Will future officers understand their responsibilities?
Will charitable initiatives possess appropriate foundations?
Will the fraternity remain grounded in Christian faith?
Will our traditions be transmitted accurately?
Will our reputation be associated with integrity and service?
These questions deserve serious consideration.
The greatest legacy of Christian leadership is not the distinction of the office we held, but the strength and faithfulness of what we leave behind.
✠ THE FINAL APPROACH — FROM RESPONSIBILITY TO CONSECRATION
As we continue towards Convocation, our daily reflections will increasingly turn towards the spiritual preparation of those gathering at Saint Mary’s.
The final seven days will follow our established sequence:
31 October — Faith
1 November — Humility
2 November — Courage
3 November — Charity
4 November — Service
5 November — Vigil and Prayer
6 November — Commitment
Each theme will invite us to consider a particular dimension of Christian discipleship.
But today’s reflection provides an essential foundation.
Before we renew our commitment, we must understand what has been entrusted.
Before we accept responsibility, we must recognise its seriousness.
Before we stand beneath the Cross, we must remember whose servants we are.
✠ THE FAITHFUL SERVANT
Our Lord’s parables frequently return to the responsibilities of servants entrusted with their master’s possessions.
The central question is not simply what the servant received.
It is what the servant did with what was entrusted.
The same question confronts every Christian Knight.
What have we done with our opportunities?
Our influence?
Our knowledge?
Our resources?
Our time?
Our capacity to help?
Our ability to encourage?
Our responsibility to protect?
Our privilege of belonging to a Christian fraternity?
These are not questions intended to produce despair.
They are invitations to purposeful living.
We cannot change every mistake of the past.
But we can determine how we will exercise our responsibilities today.
We can begin again.
We can act more wisely.
We can serve more generously.
We can lead more humbly.
And we can ask Christ for the grace to become faithful stewards.
The true honour of the Christian Knight is not found in what has been entrusted to him, but in the faithfulness with which he carries that trust.
🙏 A PRAYER FOR FAITHFUL STEWARDSHIP
Almighty and Eternal God,
You are the source of every good gift and the Lord of all creation.
Everything we possess is ultimately entrusted to our care.
Our time.
Our talents.
Our resources.
Our opportunities.
Our responsibilities.
And our capacity to serve others.
Teach us to become faithful stewards of these gifts.
Deliver us from selfish ambition.
From pride.
From carelessness.
From the misuse of authority.
From indifference towards suffering.
And from the temptation to value recognition above responsibility.
Lord Jesus Christ,
You have called us to lives of faith, humility and service.
Teach us to lead with integrity.
To govern with wisdom.
To speak with truth.
To act with compassion.
To protect the vulnerable.
To encourage the weary.
And to honour every responsibility entrusted to us.
Bless the Grand Priory of Australia — Ordre du Temple de Jérusalem.
Guide its Grand Officers for 2026–2027.
Strengthen our clergy.
Encourage our Knights and Dames.
Support our postulants.
Bless the work of the Collegium Templi Christi.
And grant that our fraternity may continue to grow in Christian faith, responsible leadership and genuine service.
Bless the Knights Templar Foundation Incorporated.
Guide those entrusted with its governance and charitable resources.
Grant integrity in financial stewardship.
Wisdom in planning.
Clarity in administration.
Compassion in ministry.
And accountability in every undertaking.
Strengthen its humanitarian and benevolent mission.
Protect vulnerable children.
Guide efforts to prevent trafficking and exploitation.
Comfort persecuted Christians.
Support those experiencing hardship.
And help us develop responsible, sustainable and effective charitable initiatives.
As we approach the 2026 Australasian Convocation and Investiture, now only eighteen days away, prepare our hearts.
Bless those undertaking ceremonial responsibilities.
Protect those travelling to Brisbane.
Guide our clergy in their spiritual ministry.
Strengthen our postulants in formation.
And renew the commitment of every Knight and Dame.
May we approach Saint Mary’s not merely prepared to participate in a ceremony, but prepared to deepen our service to Christ.
And when we are entrusted with responsibility, may we exercise it faithfully.
Not for our own glory.
Not for personal distinction.
But for the honour of Your Holy Name and the good of those we are called to serve.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

⚔️ TODAY’S CHALLENGE — BE FOUND FAITHFUL
Today, consider one responsibility that has been entrusted to you.
It may concern your family.
Your church.
Your workplace.
Your community.
Your membership.
Your office.
Or your charitable service.
Ask yourself:
1. Am I fulfilling this responsibility faithfully?
2. Have I allowed convenience, distraction or personal preference to weaken my commitment?
3. Is there something I should complete, improve or place in better order?
4. How can my stewardship benefit someone beyond myself?
Then take one practical step.
Complete an outstanding task.
Encourage someone who depends upon you.
Organise an important record.
Support a charitable initiative.
Offer assistance to a fellow member.
Or make time for prayer and spiritual reflection.
Do not underestimate the value of small acts of faithfulness.
For the Christian Knight is not called merely to undertake impressive responsibilities.
He is called to fulfil ordinary responsibilities with extraordinary integrity.
Guard the trust.
Honour the Cross.
Strengthen the fraternity.
Protect the vulnerable.
Prepare those who follow.
Lead with humility.
Serve with compassion.
Remain faithful to Christ.
The mantle is entrusted. The office is entrusted. The mission is entrusted. And the Christian Knight must be found faithful in all that has been placed within his care.
