Leukaemia Foundation

Leukaemia Foundation 🩸 We stand with Australia to help everyone impacted by any blood cancer - with care 💙 Your blood is a remarkable thing. We’re funding research to find a cure.

We stand with Australia to help cure and conquer every blood cancer – with care. It keeps you alive by giving your body what it needs, taking away what it doesn’t and fighting off infection. But more than 110,000 people in Australia are living with the devastating impact of blood cancer and it’s one of the biggest causes of cancer death. It’s a cancer of your blood and immune systems, preventing t

hem from doing what they need to keep you alive and healthy. Blood cancer develops in the places of your body where blood is made, but its exact cause is unknown. A range of things affect someone’s chance of surviving blood cancer and, it can be incurable. There are many different types of blood cancer and together they are among the most prevalent and deadly cancers in Australia today. The most common types of blood cancer are called lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma. When you support us, you support the blood cancer community. We’re driving equitable access to better diagnostics and treatments and, we’re helping people already impacted by blood cancer through emotional support, transport services and providing a home-away-from-home when families have to relocate to access life-saving treatment. “As a true introvert, I wouldn’t usually describe myself as a bold person. But my passion for the work we do often inspires me to step outside my comfort zone.”

Our recent ‘Be Bold’ Recognition Award winner, Orla, has been a Supportive Care Case Manager based in Tasmania for more than three years.

🗣️ “I have the privilege of supporting people and their families through some of life’s most challenging moments.

“My role involves providing emotional, practical and educational support, helping people with blood cancer navigate their diagnosis, treatment and the impact on their lives.

“Whether it’s a quick check-in or a longer support session, I’m able to connect with people in the way that works best for them. This allows me to meet people where they’re at and provide meaningful, client-focused care.

“I’m part of an incredible team of Supportive Care Case Managers who support people with blood cancer across Australia. We come from a wide range of healthcare backgrounds, including allied health, nursing, psychology, and palliative care, which means there’s always a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw from.

“I love what I do and feel incredibly grateful to build meaningful connections with the people and families I support each day!”

Our Recognition Awards are all about celebrating staff who go above and beyond when it comes to our values: Be Bold, Care Deeply and Make It Count.

Nominated by their peers, these awards highlight the passion, kindness and commitment our people bring to the Leukaemia Foundation’s mission every day.

Thank you, Orla, for making your actions count to best support our community. We truly value your efforts to make a difference for all people in Australia impacted by blood cancer 💙

📸 Orla was part of this year's Tour de Cure Australia peloton on the Team Leukaemia Foundation ride, a special three-day offshoot of their iconic Signature Tour in its 20th anniversary year.

🎙️ Gary Kafoa, Minjungbal man, musician and leukaemia survivor shared a golden nugget on this week’s ‘Talking Blood Cancer’ podcast.

“As a First Nations man, one of the things I like to talk about is holistic healing.

“Being able to understand that everything around us is alive.

“We seem to miss it.

“We're in a hurry to get here, get there, get everywhere.

"But the trees are alive. The grass. All the different animals out there on Country, everything's alive.

“I like to take people onto Country in holistic healing, tell them stories.

“We practice this thing called ‘dadirri’, this connection to Country, connection to earth. Just sit there and listen to everything around.

“It gives you that strength. Take your shoes off, get that energy through Mother Earth. We can't get that with our sand shoes on. So we need to take them off and walk around.

“If we look after Country, Country will look after us.”

This Reconciliation Week is about being ‘All In’, calling for Australians to wholeheartedly commit to reconciliation, every day.

We are so honoured to listen to the wisdom of people like Gary, and other First Nations peoples at the Leukaemia Foundation 💙

Today on World Blood Cancer Day, the Leukaemia Foundation is shining a light on scanxiety and the emotional toll it takes on Australians living with blood cancer and their loved ones 🩸

The ongoing monitoring associated with blood cancer and the fear of relapse can be an all-consuming part of everyday life.

🗣️ “There are over 170,000 Australians living with blood cancer. Close to half of those experience scanxiety, with rates often higher depending on their diagnosis and treatment.”

Unlike many other cancers where treatment eventually ends, blood cancers often require lifelong surveillance with patients undergoing repeated blood tests, scans, relapse testing and invasive bone marrow biopsies for years, and in many cases, indefinitely.

As a direct result, for many Australians, life becomes defined not by recovery but by waiting to see if they need to restart treatment to overcome their disease.

“The Leukaemia Foundation supports thousands of people every year with integrated emotional and psychosocial support, alongside their medical treatment, but we need help to keep up with rising demand.”

Of those Australians who seek support from the Leukaemia Foundation, half require emotional support, with nearly 9 in 10 saying it significantly improved their emotional wellbeing and helped them cope with the intense stress of blood cancer 💙

To help us continue providing specialised, supportive care to the 170,000+ Australians living with blood cancer and their families, we’re doubling your impact this World Blood Cancer Day.

From 28 May, every donation to our Tax Appeal will be matched for a limited time, doubling the difference you make. Donate now 👉 https://www.leukaemia.org.au/make-a-difference/give/tax-appeal/

"Any cancer diagnosis is extremely challenging, and navigating everything that comes with it's so hard."

🩸 In 2018, mother-of-four Christine was 56 years old when she was suddenly diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

Christine’s world was turned upside down as she relocated from Rockhampton to Brisbane for urgent treatment, including radiation, chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.

We provided her family with free accommodation and support so they could remain by her side and have a home-away-from-home 💙

At the time, Christine’s daughter Elli was 27 and pregnant with her first child, excited to become a mum herself and share the special journey with her own mother, making the diagnosis even more heartbreaking for the family.

🗣️ "In 2020, Mum passed away. It was amid COVID, so we had to have a small funeral capped at 10. After that, I vowed to make something good come out of Mum's passing."

"The next year, I held my very first Memories of Mum event in my backyard, with about 30 people."

To date, Elli and their family have raised an incredible $118,000 for our blood cancer community 🙌

"This year marks the first year we have held two events, one in Tamborine and one in Rockhampton."

"Rockhampton's event was the first Black-tie gala ball, so we're looking forward to continuing with that going forward, as it was something all our guests loved."

When someone you love is diagnosed with blood cancer, there’s always something you can do. Big or small.

Today is International Clinical Trials Day, a day celebrating the importance of clinical trials and the trailblazers among us who make them happen 🔥

Our Head of Research, Bill Stavreski, said the Leukaemia Foundation has been a long-term funding partner of trials that turn research into real options for Australian patients.

🗣️ “To date, we’ve supported 15 clinical trials, enabling more than 1,000 patients to access new and emerging therapies across leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, MDS and amyloidosis.

“With over $5 million invested, these trials have been delivered across all states and territories - bringing clinical options to patients who otherwise wouldn’t be able to access potentially lifesaving treatments.

“For many living with relapsed or refractory blood cancer, these trials have represented not just treatment but hope when standard options have run out.

“But access is still not equal in our country. Participation in clinical trials remains heavily metropolitan-based, with only around 10% of participants from regional, rural and remote areas, despite approx. 35% of Australians with blood cancer living outside major cities.

“This gap underscores a persistent and unacceptable inequity - where you live in Australia can determine access to potentially life-extending therapies.

“That’s why we’re launching a new round of Strategic Grants next month, designed to strengthen and accelerate clinical trial access, particularly for people with relapsed or refractory blood cancers, for who treatment options are most limited.

“These grants are focused on building scalable, sustainable and patient-centred trial pathways, improving participation for Australians outside of the cities, and ensuring that where you live is never a barrier to accessing innovative treatment.

“These grants are more than funding research. It’s about making sure innovation reaches every person who needs it, wherever they live.”

This is a poem about exhaustion that sleep cannot soothe.
The kind that settles softly, then rises again.
Cancer-related fatigue moves quietly but stays.
It follows you through nights and into days.

It lingers in moments that once felt light.
It dims the morning and stretches the night.
A weight without warning, unseen but true.
Yet still, you keep going, even when it’s hard to.

⛰️ Scaling mountains for his mum.

14-year-old James and his dad, Blake, climbed the Lobuche summit (6,119m) in Nepal to fundraise after his mum was diagnosed with Myelofibrosis.

🗣️ “I’ve called this journey Climbing for Cancer because I’m not doing it just for me. In December 2024, my mum (Shannon) was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer.

“Seeing her fight this has been really tough, and it made me want to do something to help. That’s why I’m dedicating my climb to raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

“The climb will be incredibly hard, with thin air, freezing temperatures, and long days on the mountain, but every step will be for my mum and for all Australians battling blood cancers.

“Every dollar donated goes directly to support research, better treatments, and vital care for families who need it most. Together, we can turn this climb into real hope for families like mine.”

The father-son team reached the summit of Lobouche just a couple of weeks ago, making James the youngest Australian ever to summit a peak over 6,000 metres!

Thanks to James and Blake’s incredible feat, and the generosity of their community 10,000kms away in Tasmania, almost $24,000 has been raised to support Australian families impacted by blood cancer 💙

“This whole journey has been about more than just climbing a mountain. It’s about community, support, and making a difference for families going through tough times.

“It honestly means a lot to have this kind of support and recognition for what we’ve been working towards with Climbing for Cancer. Knowing that people are behind the cause, not just the climb, makes it even more special!”

"In a world that can sometimes feel full of disarray, it’s inspiring to see so much kindness!

“Creating a Will is such a personal moment for someone, so it’s important to approach it with understanding and care. That’s where our partnership with Safewill l comes into play.”

🗣️ “Imagine your parents walking out the door and not coming home for nearly three months. It was tough.”

The Gales were like any other family in Ballarat. Gemma was 16 and in her final years of schooling.

🩸 But one day – and one blood test – changed everything for the family in 2023.

“My mum woke up with pain in her shoulder. She has a very high pain tolerance, so we knew something wasn’t right. They took blood tests at the local hospital, and 45 minutes later doctors came to tell her that she had leukaemia.”

Living in a regional area made things even tougher for the Gale family as her mum had to travel over 100km to a hospital in Melbourne for lifesaving treatment.

“Dad had to leave us girls at home and stay in Melbourne. Our family and friends banded together to help out as much as they could, driving us to work and school.”

While this support took the load off and made things easier for Gemma and her sister Bree, nothing could fill the gaping hole they felt at home.

“We missed sitting down at the table to have a meal together. It was a reminder of how much we missed Mum and Dad. It was very lonely."

When hearing about their situation, the Leukaemia Foundation stepped in to provide support to the Gale family 💙

“Dad wasn’t leaving Mum’s side and needed to stay in Melbourne, but he couldn’t have done that without the financial help we received from the Foundation.

"The information on their website was also very helpful for Dad. Mum wasn’t in the right headspace to research and understand what type of leukaemia she had, so Dad would drip-feed information to Mum when the time was right.”

After a ‘brutal’ three months apart, the family was finally reunited back home in Ballarat.

"The feeling of wrapping my arms around Mum was indescribable! I had my mum back!

“Leukaemia tried to rip us apart as a family, but it didn’t win. In fact, it brought us closer together and opened our eyes to what's important in life.

"It wasn’t an easy road, and we're still healing, but with the support of the Leukaemia Foundation and all of our family and friends, we're ok.”
