Matthew Newkirk: Distorted Image
15–31 May 2026
PARKER Contemporary

PARKER Contemporary presents Distorted Image, a new body of work by Brisbane-based artist Matthew Newkirk.

Continuing his exploration of signage, media and public communication, Newkirk draws on the concept of détournement—a strategy developed by the Situationists in which existing signs and images are reworked to challenge the systems they originally served.

Using the visual language and materials of public signage, Newkirk creates his own signs that question how images circulate through public space, how they establish authority, and how quickly we are conditioned to obey or ignore them. Presented within the gallery context, these works invite viewers to reconsider familiar forms and open them to ambiguity, critique and new ways of seeing.

Matthew Newkirk is a Turnbull Fellow and PhD graduate from the Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University. His work is held in major collections nationally and internationally, including the National Gallery of Australia, State Library of Queensland, Griffith University Art Museum, Artspace Mackay, HongTi Art Centre (South Korea), and the Centre for Fine Print Research (UK).

Zaachariaha Fielding: Nintirigu
15 April – 9 May

Nintirigu (“I learnt”) is a powerful new exhibition by Zaachariaha Fielding, reflecting deep connections to family, culture, and Country. Born and raised in Mimili on the APY Lands, Fielding draws on intergenerational knowledge and artistic lineage, including the influence of his father, senior artist Robert Fielding.

Well known as one half of the electronic music duo Electric Fields, Fielding extends his performative and musical practice into painting. His works are energetic and visceral, embedded with iconography inspired by Inma—a living cultural practice of ceremonial song and dance that honours Anangu culture and ancestors.

Fielding describes his paintings as deeply intertwined with sound and memory, each work echoing experiences from his community in Mimili. His practice bridges visual art and music, creating works that feel both contemporary and culturally grounded.

His achievements include winning the Wynne Prize in 2023, and being a finalist in major awards such as the Sulman Art Prize and Ramsay Art Prize. His work is held in significant collections including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Narra Bukulla Artist in Residence
Deadline: 25th May, 2026

Applications are now open for the Narra Bukulla Artist in Residence 2026, a two-month, self-directed residency set within a coastal bush landscape on Djiringanj Country, Far South Coast NSW.

Now in its third year, the residency offers artists dedicated time, space, and support to engage deeply with their practice. Surrounded by spotted gum forest, waterways, and nearby ocean headlands, this is an opportunity to slow down and connect meaningfully with place—whether through reflection, experimentation, or the development of a focused body of work.

Open to artists across disciplines, the residency is suited to self-directed practitioners who are comfortable working independently while sharing a living environment. Artists are encouraged to respond to the landscape and context, allowing the experience to shape their creative process.

The residency includes:

— Two-month stay (October–December 2026)
— Studio space
— Accommodation
— $2,500 artist stipend
— Community engagement opportunity (open studio or workshop)
— Invitation to exhibit as part of Sculpture Bermagui

Narra Bukulla is an artist-led initiative grounded in long-term engagement with place, sustainability, and community—offering a balance of solitude and connection in a focused, immersive setting.

Marian Drew: Wild Tender Close
17 April – 23 May
Onespace Gallery /

Onespace presents Wild Tender Close, a major exhibition by Marian Drew spanning both the Main and Lounge Galleries. Marking over two decades since the beginning of her renowned Australiana Still Life series, the exhibition brings together 46 significant works, curated by the artist herself.

Drew’s practice reimagines the traditional still life through intricate and often haunting photographic compositions of deceased Australian fauna, contributed by a wider community. These works transform subjects often dismissed as ‘roadkill’ into deeply considered portraits, reflecting care, dignity, and quiet reverence.

Through this lens, Drew invites audiences to reconsider human relationships with the natural world. As writer Pippa Milne reflects, the works prompt us to see animals not as peripheral, but as central to shared existence—beings with their own presence, value, and knowledge.

A highlight of the exhibition is 12 Wishes, a large-scale work stretching 7.5 metres, presented in Brisbane for the first time. While developed over twenty years, the collection resonates with renewed urgency in the context of climate change and habitat loss, offering both reflection and moments of stillness.
