The Jack Reed Foundation is a not-for-profit community based organisation that offers a range of services to at-risk and marginalised members of the community through its targeted work.
The Foundation is dedicated to helping people restore their sense of dignity and to finding pathways to making transformational change in their lives. Our moto ‘dignitas una per vitan intranet’literally translates to ‘dignity through life changing transformation’.
Our ongoing development of programs, projects and services provides pathways for our clients to live with dignity, gain skills and drive personal growth and change. This commitment is reflected in our chosen logo the Koru, a symbol of life, hope, rebirth, awakening and personal growth.
Our Mission
Creating opportunities for life transformation
99 New Beginnings
The 99 NEW BEGINNINGS project is based on opening a not-for-profit, environmentally friendly, pop-up Barber Shop made from repurposed shipping containers. The pop-up will employee disadvantaged young people as apprentices who will receive on the job training from an onsite head barber and trainer.
Five reasons why we need the 99 New Beginnings Project:
Because youth unemployment is triple the rate of adult unemployment
Because youth homelessness and mental health issues are too high
Because everyone needs a haircut
Because Barbers are highly employable and in demand
Because life transformation is possible through gaining skills and a job
Rather than the rental of traditional retail space, the Barber shop will be constructed from re-purposed shipping containers. This ensures the Barber Shop is fit for purpose, minimal in size, has a reduced carbon footprint and is not a permanent structure.
1000 Haircuts
As well as cutting the hair of the general public a compulsory component of the apprenticeships, will include the delivery of the ‘1000 Haircuts for the Homeless’ and the ‘Haircuts on the Ward’ projects. The apprentices will have access to the mobile trailer to deliver these services within the community1000 Haircuts
Every year we provide 1000 free haircuts for the homeless from our fit-for-purpose mobile Barber Shop. Instead of making the homeless come to us, we go to them.
Why Haircuts for the Homeless?
Our trailer has its own generator for power, ensuring we can go anywhere anytime.
The trailer is designed to ensure that the homeless receive quality grooming services in an authentic, retro barber atmosphere. The trailer is equipped with air-conditioning, a nespresso machine, and a bose sound system.
Because something as simple as a haircut can help to restore our sense of dignity. Having a regular haircut is something that most of us take for granted. When your dossing in a hostel or your sleeping rough or couch surfing a haircut is often not high on your list of priorities which are dominated by finding food and shelter for the day. Not only does how we feel influence how we look but the reverse is also true, how we look influences how we feel. Free Haircuts for the Homeless are provided across the Moreton Bay area on a rotation basis with coordination and help from a range of local service providers and community groups.
Not only does how we feel influence how we look but the reverse is also true, how we look influences how we feel.
A person’s self-image is interwoven in all aspects of their appearance, especially their hair.
