North Brisbane Orchid Society

North Brisbane Orchid Society We are a society dedicated to encouraging the love of orchid growing and cultivation. We welcome new members interested in learning about these amazing plants.

We meet the second Tues each month from Feb to Nov at 9.30am and the fourth Thurs at 7.30pm. Meetings are held at the Banyo Baptist Church Hall Cnr. Hartley St. and Musgrave Road, Banyo. Day meetings are at 9.30am on the second Tuesday Night meetings at 7.30pm on the fourth Thursday of each month, February to November. Some Growers Groups are held each year on a weekend afternoon for members to

learn more about cultivation and care of their plants. At our meetings we have interesting Guest Speakers and refreshments are supplied free. Raffle prizes, lucky door prizes and prizes for judging results are vouchers for use at the Trading Post which is open to all members and supplies most potting needs at very reasonable prices. A monthly Bulletin is sent to all members with minutes of the meetings and results of monthly judging. Interesting articles on care of plants are included. Our extensive Library is available for members to borrow books about all orchid varieties and floral arrangement, and magazines from Australian Orchid Societies. Our Orchid Show in August at the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens has our members competing with members of other Societies. We have potting demonstrations and helpful members in plant sales. Our Christmas Party is the highlight of the year. All this for $12.00 membership per year and $15.00 for couples, $8.00 for pensioners and $10.00 for pensioner couples. North Brisbane Orchid Society will be holding our Annual Spring Orchid Show at Pine Rivers Show Hall at Lawnton on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th of September 2025. Opening on Saturday from 8.30am to 3.30pm and Sunday from 8.30am to 2.30pm. Admission $4 and children under 14 free. Lots of lovely orchids to view in the show display and plants and cultivation needs for sale. Refreshments available at reasonable prices.

There are lots of orchid videos on YouTube. I’d like to share a few that I find helpful.
The first is Howard’s Orchids. He grows his orchids in Cambridge, UK. Although the climate is cooler than Brisbane, I find his knowledge and experience really interesting and inspiring. He has some very interesting species and primary hybrids in his collection. He puts out videos every few months.
The second is Hello Lantern Lovers from Matthew in Melbourne. Matthew is a relative newby to orchid growing, but has taken to it with a passion. Again his climate is cooler than ours in SEQ, but his well-researched insights, ability to learn and share his newfound knowledge and enthusiasm is great. He puts out new videos every Friday.
The third is Orchid House - Fort Lauderdale, Florida with Olivier. His climate is similar to that of SEQ so the orchids he grows and his experiences should be quite directly relevant to us in SEQ. He has a long catalogue of videos about particular orchids with very useful information on growing them outdoors.
