Today, on Vietnam Veterans’ Day, we pause to recognise and thank the Australians who served during the Vietnam War, and the families who served alongside them and supported them in ways often unseen.

This year marks 60 years since the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966 — a significant moment in Australia’s military history and the reason we commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day on this date.

We remember those who did not return home, acknowledge those who returned carrying the lasting impacts of war and their service, and recognise the families who supported them then and in the decades that followed.

To our Vietnam veterans: thank you for your service, your sacrifice and the legacy you have created for the generations of veterans who follow.

Today, and always, we remember.

Salute For Service welcomes the new Queensland Veterans and Veterans’ Families Strategy, built around five key areas:

- Recognition and commemoration
- Community and connection
- Health and wellbeing
- Education and employment
- Housing and support
These priorities reflect what we see every day — there is no one-size-fits-all approach to supporting veterans and their families.

Whether someone is still serving, transitioning out of Defence or has been a Veteran for decades, the right support at the right time can make a real difference.

We’re excited to see the focus on practical outcomes and look forward to seeing these priorities turned into action across Queensland.
Veterans and their families have supported Australia through generations of service. We need to make sure we continue supporting them.

DEFENCE COMMUNITY SPORTS EXPO – YOU’RE INVITED!

Invictus Australia is hosting a free, family-friendly Defence Community Sports Expo on Sunday 23 August, from 10am–1pm at the Townsville Sports Precinct, North Ward. The event is an opportunity for current serving ADF members, veterans and their families to get active, try something new, connect with others and discover the many sporting and recreation opportunities available within our local community.

There will be a great range of sports and activities to try, including:

• 🏓 Pickleball
• 🏀 Wheelchair basketball
• ⚾ Baseball
• 🎯 Laser shooting
• 🥋 Martial arts
• 🏓 Table tennis
• 🚣 Indoor rowing
• 🎮 Veteran Gaming
• and more!

There will also be live music, a BBQ, coffee, free popcorn, giveaways and activities for all ages, with free show bags for the first 50 people through the gate. We’ll also have local sporting clubs, ex-service organisations, community groups and wellbeing providers on hand to showcase the opportunities and support available to the Defence community. If you’re in Townsville, we’d love for you to pop in and say hello and see what Invictus Australia and our community partners are doing. I’d also be very happy to give you a brief tour of the expo and introduce you to some of the organisations involved.

I encourage all families of Veterans to register to the Veterans and Families forum to help shape what's needed for YOU.

The Toolbox is a trusted digital hub with practical information, resources, tools and support pathways designed for Veterans, Australian Defence Force members and Families.

It helps people access guidance when they need it — not weeks later, not after hours of searching, and not when they are already overwhelmed.

So far, The Toolbox has reached more than 4,600 people and includes more than 285 evidence-informed resources.
