📸 What happens when you put a pro photographer, a truckload of Sony gear and a brand-new 400mm lens in the same room?

A very good night at Queensland Camera Group! 😎

We were stoked to welcome Photographer, Sony Advocate, and good friend Craig Turnbull, who shared his insights on “Travel Photography and Photo Tours: What Works, What Doesn’t, and Why.”

Craig brought plenty of experience — and plenty of stories — to the evening, giving us lots to think about when it comes to getting the most from our photography while travelling.

We were also joined by Shaun Lister, Sony’s Digital Imaging Specialist for Queensland, who arrived with what can only be described as a truckload of Sony bodies and lenses for us to try. 🙌📷

And it wasn’t just the QCG crew! We were delighted to welcome fellow Sony Scene members along for the evening too.

Craig also gave us a first look at Sony’s latest lens, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS.

Our verdict? It’s a beast… but remarkably light for one! 🦅

A big thank you to Craig, Shaun and everyone who joined us for a great night of photography, gear, travel and plenty of good conversation.

Some more behind the scenes action at the recent judging of Rivercity Prints competition, this time Non A Grade. Judge Kris Anderson noted the very high quality of entries, particularly when measured against the professional competitions he sees, which was a terrific compliment. Congratulations to our own Ray Eisenmenger who took out second place with ‘Ekka Wheel Abstract’ and Sarah Jensen with third for ‘Black and White in Colour’. Commiserations to Brian Moyle whose image ‘Immense’ was also in the mix for an award.

A hearty and warm congratulations to Ralph McConaghy, who took out Champion Print in this year’s Rivercity Print Competition, held yesterday afternoon.

It is always fascinating to hear why a particular image is singled out for an award, and our judges - Kris Anderson, Sue Gordon and Eric Victor - were very generous at the end of the event, sharing some of their thoughts on why Ralph’s Midnight Oil shone through.

Speaking on behalf of Sue and Eric, Kris noted that it was a treat to be able to argue over such a strong five-image shortlist. But there were myriad things that stood out about Ralph’s print: the beautiful detail in the texture, his choice to leave some of the imperfections in the tank, and the magnificent printing - Ralph prints his own work. The smart square crop was another strong choice. This combination of really strong decisions came together to create really strong art.

Sue spoke about the consideration given to how the mat complements the paper and the image, noting that while it wasn't the reason the image was chosen, it is an important consideration.

Eric spoke to how difficult it is to work in the genre of minimalism, and how challenging it can be to keep an image alive with less and less in it.

🏆 A QCG TWO-PEAT! 🏆

What a Saturday afternoon for maroon!

Just as the Brisbane Lions celebrate their three-peat, Queensland Camera Group has achieved a winning streak of our own, winning the Rivercity Print Competition for the second year running! 🎉📸

A huge congratulations to all of the competing camera clubs. It's wonderful to see so many are keeping the tradition of printing alive. It's no easy feat putting these entries together, matting them up, ensuring their delivery, and then bringing them home. You are all to be applauded, along with our mates, the Brisbane Camera Group, which ran and hosted this year's competition.

And a very special thank you to our judges — Eric Victor (left), Kris Anderson (right) and Sue Gordon (white top) for giving up the last Saturday in September to spend it with us, carefully considering and judging the prints. We really appreciate the time, knowledge and generosity you brought to the competition.

And a big shout out to our president, Twiggy Daniels, for representing the club. More details in coming days on the final results.

⏱️ SLOW DOWN, LOOK GOOD 📸

Tonight was print judging night at QCG — set subject: Long Exposure — and the room brought the blur in all the right ways. Silky water, light trails, cloud streaks… you name it, we shot it slow.

Huge thanks to our judge for the night, Anne Russell, for the sharp eye and even sharper feedback (ironic, we know).

Open entries also had a massive showing — the standard just keeps climbing 👏

And an epic turnout of QCG members made for a brilliant night all round.

Bonus points to Leanne Sinclair for the homemade chocolate slice that disappeared faster than a 30-second exposure 🍫

🏆 QCG members make their mark at the Queensland Interclub!

There were some fantastic results for QCG photographers in this year's Queensland Interclub Digital Competition, with Martin Riley taking out 1st place in People with Four Italians.

And there was more success across the sections, with:

👏 Gaye Edwards — Bloke of Many Colours — Top 5, People
👏 Nick LeFebvre — Indiana — Top 5, A Grade Open
👏 Kerrie Wall — Dusty Runs — Top 5, Non A Grade Open

With 23 camera clubs competing across Minimalism, Nautical, People, Scapes, Nature and Open, these are terrific individual achievements and a great reflection of the talent within QCG.

Congratulations to all our members who represented QCG, and a big thank you to the grading committee for selecting our entries and to Elizabeth Riley for coordinating everything behind the scenes.

Congratulations also to Photo Arts Tweed, this year's overall champion club. 👏

Dinner by Maziar Kazemi on Friday night 👨‍🍳, followed by an epic early morning photo shoot at Crams Reserve and a cheeky recovery breakfast in Nimbin 🚬. Why the late post? Congratulations to Kerrie Wall aka Smoko Stump Images whose image, 'Dusty Runs' was awarded 'Judges Choice' in last night's Australia Cup awards ceremony held by the Australian Photographic Society. Kerrie's image was selected from a pool of 60 other camera clubs, each submitting 20 images to the theme of 'Australiana – the spirit, identity and visual story of Australia'. Her signature of shooting into the light is beautifully displayed in the image and the club is very proud of her success. She works hard at it.
