11/05/2026
On Wednesday 6 May, we came together in reflection, remembrance, and solidarity for National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day, honouring the lives lost due to domestic and family violence (DFV) and standing alongside victim-survivors, families, and all those impacted by DFV.
On behalf of the organising committee, we would like to extend our appreciation to everyone who attended the Candle Lighting Vigil 2026 in Brisbane. Your presence reflected the care, empathy, and shared support within our community, while helping continue the important conversation about ending domestic and family violence.
Our sincere appreciation to hear from family members- 'secondary victims' of DFV: Vanessa Fowler, OAM, Co-Chair of the DFV Prevention Council, Shayne Probert, Danielle Carroll, and Luis Prado & Zoe, and who bravely shared their stories and experiences they faced as a result of losing a loved one to DFV.
A special acknowledgement to Shaniah for your welcome to country, Kay McGrath for guiding the evening with grace as MC, the Brisbane Combined Unions Choir for your moving songs, and to Aria Clemmet-Kennedy, Laurel Scrammell, Tjiala Brown-Roberts from the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts for their cultural performance.
We were honoured to hear from the Honourable Amanda Camm MP Minister for Families, Seniors, and Disability Services and Minister for Child Safety and Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence; and Queensland Deputy Police Commissioner Regional Operations, John Tims.
To our colleagues in the important vigil organising committee, thank you for organising this important evening and for the meaningful work you do every day to support those impacted by DFV across Queensland.
