Musgrave Park - a place of refuge and respite for the homeless and the vulnerable for many many decades and a gathering place of significance to Traditional Owners long before that - has become the exact opposite.

It’s been heartbreaking to see the most vulnerable people in our society used as political fodder and pawns in people’s agendas over the past couple of years. To see our community become a place where vulnerable people are criminalised and rough sleepers - who have traditionally been safe in these spaces - fearful for their safety and victims themselves of escalating violence is devastating.
Putting people in tents should always have been the last option after all other accommodation and support options had been exhausted; never the first choice.

With the callous and tone deaf announcement from Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, we as a community find ourselves in a strong position to advocate for real, meaningful change for people sleeping rough in our community and across our city; We must apply pressure to the LNP state government to step up and provide as-long-as-needed, suitable, stable, supported crisis accommodation to everyone sleeping rough until such time as affordable permanent housing can be sourced. The government has the means and the resources to do this without leaving vulnerable people sleeping rough to become collateral damage in this mess - it’s a choice not to.

We will update you in the coming days around how you can support.

Update regarding rough sleeper supports in West End and South Brisbane, Monday 10/3:

Emmanuel City Mission will remain open tonight and resume normal opening hours tomorrow.

Micah Projects at Kurilpa Hall will remain open tonight, to be confirmed from tomorrow onwards.

Department of Housing will be on the ground in the community today to look at accommodation options for people sleeping rough - if you are sleeping rough please take this opportunity to engage.

A massive shout out and thank you to the workers, volunteers and community who have worked tirelessly around the clock to support our most vulnerable people - Roby, Glen, Tim, Luke, Jean and the team at Emmanuel City Mission for opening your doors, providing hot meals, warm showers and a place of refuge for people doing it tough during this cyclone and the team at Micah Projects for opening the doors at Kurilpa Hall, providing meals and a place of refuge to people sleeping rough and working 24 hours outreaching to people sleeping rough all across Brisbane, transporting people to safety and delivering meals, care and nursing support to people in need.

We appreciate you ♥️

As Cyclone Alfred brings severe weather to Brisbane, Emmanuel City Mission will remain open 24/7 from 7 AM tomorrow to 1 PM Saturday to provide urgent shelter and support to those in need.

When other places close, we open our doors to ensure no one is left out in the cold.

Over the next 72 hours, we will provide:
✅ 24-hour safe shelter
✅ Hot meals: 7 AM breakfast, 12 PM lunch, 6 PM dinner
✅ All-day access to cereal, tea, and instant coffee
✅ Hot showers and essential supplies

This effort is being made possible with support from Southbank Police, West End Police, , Paul Slater from Northwest Community Group and Trina Massey. 🙏

**Urgent Help Needed**
Keeping our doors open around the clock comes at a cost, and we urgently need donations to continue providing food, shelter, and care to those with nowhere else to go.

If you’re in a position to help during this unprecedented weather event, we’d be so grateful.

Donate today if you can: http://bit.ly/4hfffzW

Good morning everyone. Over the past 24 hours we’ve received a lot of emails, messages and phone calls regarding the community response to Cyclone Alfred which is due to cross Brisbane on Thursday night, particularly in response to our rough sleeping community in Musgrave Park, Kurilpa Point and Riverside Drive.

Please rest assured there will be a number of community orgs, including Feeding 4101, working on responses to the upcoming cyclone that we will announce as soon as we receive confirmation.
