At Pooh Corner Bushland Reserve, Wacol, Qld, with successful breeding the current koala population estimate at Pooh Corner and Wacol Bushlands is 20 – 25 individuals.

A project to re-establish a koala population at Pooh Corner commenced in September 2022 with initial two releases. Fifteen koalas (9F, 6M) were released as population founders between Sep 2022 and mid-2025.

🐨 So where exactly do the animals go while we wait for their “replacement” habitat?

Here’s the uncomfortable bit about biodiversity offsets in Australia:

• One Australian study found 21,928 ha of native vegetation was approved for clearing, while 83,459 ha was allocated as offsets — yet researchers estimated it would take 146 YEARS to achieve “no net loss” of vegetation area.

• A study of 208 offsets in Western Australia found at most 39% were effective, while 30% were not implemented or inadequately implemented.

• A 2025 study examining 1,395 NSW development and offset assessments found the average offset was 4.9 times the area being impacted — and researchers still concluded that “no net loss” was unlikely to be achieved.

• Australia’s own State of the Environment reporting says more than 70% of development proposals assessed under the EPBC Act include offsets as a condition of approval, while acknowledging that offset effectiveness is often not evaluated.

And even Commonwealth guidance acknowledges that, in many cases, the environmental “gain” from an offset only starts after the original habitat has already been impacted.

Which brings us back to the animals on our truck.

Where do they live for those 20… 50… 100… 146 years?

A forest is not simply hectares on a spreadsheet.

It is mature trees. Hollows. Food trees. Shelter. Breeding places. Connected habitat. Established relationships between thousands of living things.

You can offset a number.

You cannot instantly offset an ecosystem.

Our guest speaker is Keith McCosh from Save Woogaroo Forest.

Keith will give an update on the Woogaroo Forest campaign and our joint sense of HOME.

Bio:
Keith is a resident of Bellbird Park on a "Land for Wildlife" property on Woogaroo Creek with elements of the famous "Woogaroo Scrub" rainforest. He has lived in the area for 50 years.

A retired environmental action officer, Keith is now a fulltime conservationist and grandparent.

Woogaroo Forest decision deferred to 1 Oct 2026.

🚨 DECISION DELAYED: Woogaroo Forest's fate pushed back to 1 October 🚨

The Australian Government has just extended the deadline for Minister Murray Watt's decision on the Springview Village 2 & 3 development (EPBC 2019/8575) - the referral that could seal Woogaroo Forest's fate.

The new deadline: 1 October 2026.

This isn't good news and it isn't bad news. It's more time - and we intend to use every single day of it. Right now, the Minister is weighing a decision on 450 hectares of irreplaceable native habitat - home to koalas and countless other species found nowhere else. Every extra day is another chance to make sure he hears from us before he makes it.
