💦 Today’s post is about access to water in the community surrounding BEC. Over the days of our visit, the gents would often go over and greet the kids gathering water at the learning centre’s bore access point. Each day, the kids would come with as many containers as they could carry back, so their home had water to drink and cook with. It was funny to chat to the kids and try to communicate when we didn’t speak the same language. ☺️
This was my only go on the pump (it was hard work!), but Ross and Joel would often operate the pump for the kids. Us bzungu talked about the time and energy every family would dedicate just to gathering water. I remember saying that ‘living is a full-time job’.
I look so sweaty in the video because I’d just finished playing football (soccer) with the bigger kids staying at the centre. My wish would be that these kids could play football with us, instead of having the responsibility of transporting water.
BEC has two projects on their wish list, one to repair the bore in these videos as the base has now broken apart. The second, digging a deeper bore and pump, to future-proof ahead of a drought like the area experienced this year. It was a significant expense to purchase bottled water. Money that was diverted from other activities.
