A well-meaning turtle rescue can accidentally turn nasty if you make these common mistakes. Fortunately one of our volunteers knew how to assist this particular turtle efficiently AND without harm.
**🐢 HERE’S WHAT NOT TO DO! 🛑**
👎 1. DON'T determine the direction and turn them around. Turtles are incredibly determined creatures. They are usually crossing the road for a very specific reason, like heading to a nesting site or a preferred water source.
👎 2. If you pick them up and put them back on the side they just started from, they will simply turn right back around and try to cross again the moment you drive away…and we don’t want that. Can you hear the cars zooming by in a 50kph zone?
👍 3. Always move them in the **exact** direction they were already heading.
👎 4. DON'T relocate them to a "better" spot. There’s no such thing…they know where they’re headed, you won’t be helping them if you decide your way is best.
👎5. Many turtle species have strict, small home ranges. If you move them to an unfamiliar area, they will spend the rest of their lives wandering stressed and lost trying to find their way home, frequently crossing even more roads in the process. Just move them safely across to the nearest patch of grass.
👎 6. DON'T pick them up by the tail
This can easily cause severe, irreversible damage to their spine and vertebrae. Instead, gently grasp them on either side of their shell, well behind their front legs.
⚠️ 7. Last of all, DON'T risk your own safety. As much as your instinct is to save the turtle, your life is the priority. Never slam on your brakes, pull over abruptly without indicating, or step into active, high-speed traffic. Keep your hazard lights on, watch for oncoming cars, and only help if you can do so completely safely.
Let’s keep them moving safely in the right direction.
