Our Story
The vision of Blackwood Creatives Incorporated (formerly Blackwood Valley Arts Alliance Inc) is to help nurture a supportive environment for all creative and artistic endeavours to thrive. Our objectives are to encourage people of diverse culture and ages to share their creative talents with the local and broader community and to provide youth with opportunities and encourage them to participate in the art forms of their choice. BVAA was initiated in November 2011. Bob Gregory, the Shire Arts Officer at the time, called a public meeting through which a steering committee was formed. June Davy was elected as Chair person. With incorporation, Blackwood Valley Arts Alliance (BVAA) became independent and as such was not - and is still not - attached to the Shire Council or any other body. A recent change in direction with the re-naming of the body to Blackwood Creatives Incorporated (while still reflecting the core values of the original BVAA) has encouraged new members to join the committee and a resurgence of enthusiasm has rekindled work being done to raise the profile of art and culture in our community.
We would like to see widespread collaboration between all the areas of the arts in our town and region – visual art in all it’s forms as well as textiles, photography, theatre, music, film etc.
With all those different groups engaged and excited about how art in the area can be enriched, revered and enjoyed, we are going to see a very exciting and dynamic growth period ahead. When that happens with multi layered collaboration, meaningful connection will be the reward. BC is a not-for-profit organisation and relies on membership fees, fund raising and funds from running courses to further the development of our arts programmes. We would love you to consider becoming a member of our group and welcome friends in any capacity. As members you will be able to help guide the direction of BC, have voting rights, enjoy first option to participate in our workshops and have the opportunity to attend special Blackwood Creatives social events.
