It was an honour to speak about eating disorders at the Mental health workshop hosted in Leeds last weekend. The need for awareness around the signs, symptoms, and causes of these disorders, particularly within the Black African community, is urgent. Many individuals suffer silently because eating disorders in our community often go unrecognised—both by patients and healthcare professionals.

As a Nutritionist, I've encountered people struggling with eating disorders, but getting them the proper help is a long, challenging process, and often culturally competent care is lacking. It's crucial for healthcare providers to be trained to recognise these issues, regardless of a patient’s background, and to avoid the assumption that eating disorders don’t affect certain communities.

We need to break the silence, push for resources, and advocate for cultural competency across the healthcare sector. This is just the beginning, but together we can create lasting change.

Thank you for Leeds for the opportunity to start this conversation.

Let’s keep raising awareness!

Today is World Mental Health Day, a time to reflect on the importance of mental health awareness in our communities. I’m incredibly excited to be part of a workshop this Saturday, 12th October, where I’ll be discussing eating disorders—an issue that often remains silent or taboo in our community, still burdened by stigma.

This is an opportunity to begin breaking the silence around eating disorders, and I’m truly hopeful that it’s the start of much-needed conversations.

If you’re available, I’d love to see you there. Let’s work together to raise awareness and support each other. Hope you can make it!

See you there!
