Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad Southern Peninsula Rescue, volunteer marine search & rescue service Blairgowrie, Mornington Peninsula SPRS has 2 rescue boats - 10m Naiad & 7.5 m Naiad.

SPRS is a volunteer marine search & rescue organisation providing support to Water Police & other emergency services. The SPRS Base which includes a fully equipped radio room & access to training facilities is located at the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron. Area of operation is primarily the southern end of Port Phillip Bay & the Surf Coast of Bass Strait
Members train each Sunday between 10 am & 1 pm & respond to emergency callouts 24/7.

**SP2's New Chapter Begins—Thanks to Our Amazing Volunteers! 🛥️**

Our trusted rescue boat SP2 is heading to a new home at Safety Beach, and our volunteers made sure she went out looking her best! 🧹

No life jackets needed this time—just rubber gloves, scrubbing brushes, and plenty of elbow grease. Watching our crew give SP2 a proper spring clean reminded us why we're so grateful for the people who keep our rescue service running, day in and day out.

SP2's served us brilliantly, and we know she'll continue that legacy at her new base.

Practice makes safer boating. ⚓️ This spring, run through a few simple drills: practice a mock tow, rehearse man-overboard recovery close to shore, and time your launch and retrieval from the Blairgowrie ramp. Check that all crew know where lifejackets and throwable devices are stored and how to use the VHF. We regularly train volunteers on these skills so they’re ready 24/7 — you can do the same at a low-risk distance from shore. Perfect weather meant perfect practice this weekend! 🌊 Our crew was out working through towing and rafting drills—two of the most critical skills we rely on when someone needs us.

It's all about repetition and communication. When conditions are calm, we push ourselves hard so muscle memory kicks in when the seas don't cooperate. Every shout, every adjustment, every smooth handover between boats gets us one step closer to being ready for whatever comes our way.

What really impressed us? The girls spotted a small boat that had broken its mooring and took action—securing it before it drifted out to sea. That's exactly the quick thinking and initiative we value in our squad.

Engine, prop and fuel — the mechanical side of spring prep. ⚓️ Before your next trip from Blairgowrie or Safety Beach, book an engine service, inspect propeller for dings, clear weeds, check seals, and test your bilge pump under load. Manage fuel by topping up before long runs and keep a safe reserve. For petrol engines, check fuel lines for cracks; for diesels, test filters. Our volunteer crew has towed many vessels that could have avoided breakdowns with early maintenance — it’s cheaper and safer to sort issues now. If you’re unsure what to look for, come down to the station and we’ll talk you through the basics. Furry crew members need safety too! 🐕⛵ We've spotted plenty of beloved pets enjoying the water around the Mornington Peninsula—and we love it. But here's the thing: they need proper protection.

If your four-legged mate joins you on the boat, get them a properly fitted pet life jacket. It's not just comfort—it's lifesaving if an unexpected tumble happens.

Same goes for you: check the weather, tell someone where you're heading, and carry your safety gear.

Safety gear check — a reminder from Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad as the days warm up. 🛟 Before you head out from Blairgowrie or Safety Beach, confirm every on-board safety item is current and accessible: lifejackets fit everyone, flares are unexpired, fire extinguisher charged, towing lines in good condition and your VHF/EPIRB batteries are fresh. Don’t forget portable chargers for phones and a hard copy of charts for Port Phillip Heads passages. If you’re unsure how to test an EPIRB or check a lifejacket, stop by the station or ask at your yacht club — little checks prevent big problems.
