📢 A Gentle Reminder for Aged Care Visitors

Visiting someone living with dementia on Monday 27 July?

🕑 At approximately 2:00 pm (AEST) on Monday 27 July 2026, Australia will conduct a nationwide test of the new AusAlert emergency warning system.

📱 Compatible mobile phones, tablets and some smartwatches will:

* 🚨 Sound a loud siren-like alert (around 10 seconds)
* 📳 Vibrate
* 📲 Display a message stating that it is only a test

💜 If you’re visiting an aged care home, hospital or someone living with dementia…

Please be mindful that the sudden loud alarm may be:

* Confusing
* Frightening
* Distressing
* Startling

A calm explanation and reassurance can make a significant difference.

A little preparation can help reduce unnecessary anxiety.

🤝 Please consider letting staff and other visitors know about the test, particularly if you’re supporting someone who may become distressed by unexpected loud noises.

Dementia Action Week – September 2026

This year’s Dementia Action Week theme from Dementia Australia is:

“It’s time to talk about dementia.”

Dementia affects nearly half a million Australians, yet many people still feel uncomfortable talking about it. Starting conversations helps reduce stigma, increases understanding, and ensures people living with dementia and their families feel seen, heard, and supported.

At Blacktown Dementia Action Group, we believe that talking about dementia can change lives. Whether you’re living with dementia, caring for someone, supporting a friend, or simply wanting to learn more, every conversation matters.

Throughout Dementia Action Week, we encourage our community to:
💙 Start a conversation about dementia
💙 Learn more about the condition
💙 Challenge myths and misconceptions
💙 Support people living with dementia and their care partners
💙 Help create a more dementia-friendly Blacktown

Together, we can build a community where no one faces dementia alone.

Because every conversation can make a difference

After presenting this important topic to neuroscience professionals, clinincians and PhD students, this powerful conversation is now coming to unpaid carers and the dementia community.

Ambiguous Loss explores the hidden grief experienced when loving someone living with dementia where the person is physically present, but the relationship is constantly changing.

This heartfelt presentation shines a light on:

The emotional impact of dementia on families and carers
The invisible grief many carers carry silently
Love, identity, connection, and change
Finding hope, support, and understanding through the journey
Because sometimes the hardest grief is loving someone who is still here.
