📣 Introducing Dr Lachie McKeeman as Community for Benambra's Independent Candidate

Today, we're proud to introduce Dr Lachie McKeeman as the community-backed independent candidate for Benambra.

Lachie is a rural GP, father of three, and volunteer firefighter who has lived in North East Victoria since 2013 and now lives in Wooragee with his family. He works in Wodonga and is deeply involved in the local community through the CFA and Yackandandah Football and Netball Club.

Through his work as a doctor, Lachie sees firsthand the challenges facing regional communities - especially access to healthcare, workforce shortages, cost-of-living pressures, and the need for strong local services.

Lachie is standing because he believes this region has been taken for granted for too long and deserves a stronger, independent voice in Parliament.

A quick update on the Community for Benambra candidate process 📣

As part of our commitment to a genuine community-led process, applications were reviewed by an independent panel made up of respected locals from across the electorate.

The panel brought together people with deep and varied experience across community leadership, education, emergency recovery, agriculture, business, law, communications and service organisations. Members were drawn from communities across the electorate, including Wodonga, Beechworth, Mitta Valley and Yackandandah, helping ensure a broad regional perspective throughout the process. Panel members were not selected based on political views or voting intentions, but for the experience, judgement and community insight they could bring to a fair and rigorous process.

Applicants were assessed against the values identified through our community survey process — including integrity, transparency, independence and genuine community representation — as well as their capacity to handle the pressures, scrutiny and responsibilities that come with serving as a Member of Parliament.

We’re now nearing the end of the process and look forward to announcing our candidate in the coming weeks. Stay tuned 👀

EOIs are closed - what's next? 🧐
We’ve pulled together a panel of a broad cross-section of respected community leaders from across the state electorate of Benambra to review applications.
Their focus is simple: finding someone who will genuinely represent local voices and priorities.

In establishing our EOI process, we reviewed candidate selection approaches from independent movements across Australia and developed a model we believe works best for Benambra.

Transparent. Community-led. Focused on outcomes.

EOIs are now closed - thank you to everyone who applied or shared the opportunity 👏

📝 Next up: a community Selection Panel will shortlist and interview candidates in late April, with a final decision in early May.

🎉 Mid May: we’ll introduce Benambra’s community-backed candidate - and invite you to the launch.

This process is built on what we’ve heard from across the region - and there’ll be ways to get involved in the candidate’s campaign once their campaign kicks off!
