Yesterday, we had the opportunity to visit Yarrawonga Sacred Heart College, where we delivered an engaging, hands-on water workshop for the Year 7 students as part of the NE Regional Schools Program.

Students explored the importance of water on a global scale, gaining insight into how water is distributed around the world and why it is such a vital, yet limited, resource. We also unpacked the water cycle, helping students understand how water moves through the environment and connects ecosystems across the planet.

A key focus of the workshop was developing an appreciation for water as a precious resource. Students were encouraged to think critically about water use, sustainability, and the role they can play in protecting this essential element for future generations.

One of the highlights of the session was the investigation of macroinvertebrates collected from local freshwater samples. Students used observation and identification techniques to examine these small aquatic organisms, learning how they can act as indicators of water quality and ecosystem health.

It was fantastic to see such curiosity and enthusiasm from the students as they engaged with real-world environmental science in a meaningful and interactive way.

Recently, Strathbogie Landcare, in partnership with Gecko Clan, hosted a highly informative blackberry field day focused on improving management of invasive blackberry infestations. A big thank you to Sean Horsburgh from SMH W**d Control and drone pilot Matthew Empey for sharing their expertise and demonstrating innovative approaches to tackling large and hard-to-access infestations. Their insights into combining on-ground techniques with drone-assisted control provided valuable, practical strategies for landholders looking to better manage blackberry spread across challenging terrain.

Today we visited Broken Creek Primary School alongside Goomalibee Landcare as part of our NE Regional Schools Program.

Students had a fantastic time exploring where water comes from, learning about common pollutants, and getting hands-on with macroinvertebrates to understand water quality. They also worked together to come up with practical ideas for how they can help protect and care for their local waterways.

It was inspiring to see their curiosity, enthusiasm, and thoughtful solutions for safeguarding our precious water resources.
