🐛 GET YOUR BUG ON! 💧

What starts with a tray of waterbugs becomes so much more.

Macro Muster is citizen science, river protection, STEM learning, family connection, curiosity, community.. and seriously cool bugs!

Twice a year, young people, local families, volunteers, scientists and partners come together to count waterbugs and help build a clearer picture of river health across the Bellinger, Kalang and Nambucca catchments.

It’s hands-on.

It’s meaningful.

And it’s a little bit magical.

This event is much more than just leading-edge citizen science.

Its exploring super-cool bugs, it's mindfulness, it's community connection and it's a beautiful entry point for regional young people to see themselves in STEM.

What happens when students get hands-on with environmental STEM? 💧🌏

At the STEM Conference for Regional Girls, students had the opportunity to learn from the team at ENV Solutions, building their own water filtration systems and exploring how science and engineering help solve real-world environmental challenges.

The activity sparked curiosity, creativity and plenty of conversations about future possibilities.

One student reflected:

💬 "STEM is involved in basically every career that you choose."

Another shared:

💬 "I didn't think investigating would be fun, but it was actually really fun."

These simple but powerful insights remind us why opportunities like this matter.

By sharing their knowledge, experiences and career journeys, the ENV Solutions team helped students discover that STEM isn't just something you learn at school – it's a pathway to meaningful careers that improve communities and protect our environment.

A huge thank you to ENV Solutions for supporting the STEM Conference for Regional Girls and helping inspire the next generation of environmental scientists, engineers and changemakers.

💙 Together, we're creating stronger STEM pathways and connections for young people across the Mid North Coast.

What would you tell your Year 8 self?

At the STEM Conference for Regional Girls, one of our speakers, Jess Kuan from BCU Bank, shared a simple piece of advice:

Be brave.

As we've started reading through the student feedback from the day, it has been wonderful to see this message reflected back to us time and again.

Students spoke about trying new things, stepping outside their comfort zones, meeting inspiring women and discovering opportunities they hadn't considered before.

"Be brave and follow your dream" - Year 8 student

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is take the first step, ask the question, put our hand up or have a go.

Thank you Jess for sharing your story and reminding students that growth often begins on the other side of bravery.

💚 What advice would you give your Year 8 self?

Thank you, Toormina High School, for sharing this wonderful reflection! 💚

It was a privilege to welcome your students to the STEM Conference for Regional Girls and see them embrace every opportunity with such curiosity, enthusiasm and confidence.

One of our goals is to help young people discover the incredible range of pathways available in STEM and connect with women who are already making a difference in these fields. Hearing that students left with new ideas, valuable connections and a greater appreciation of the opportunities available is exactly why we do this work.

A huge congratulations to the Toormina High students for the way they represented their school throughout the day. The future is certainly bright! ✨

Thank you also to the teachers, speakers, mentors, showcase exhibitors, sponsors and partners who helped make this inspiring day possible.

We're still smiling after last Thursday's STEM Conference for Regional Girls 💙

Throughout the day, 135 Year 8 girls and non-binary students from across the Mid North Coast met inspiring women working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, explored hands-on activities, discovered new career pathways and asked lots of questions.

Some of the reflections shared by students have stayed with us:

✨ "In failing and experiencing new things, you grow from the moment you try."

✨ "This event made me realise just how many occupations and opportunities a career in STEM can give you."

✨ "STEM is for everyone. Do what you love."

These words remind us why this event matters.

When young people can meet role models, hear their stories and see the many different pathways into STEM, they begin to imagine new possibilities for themselves.

Thank you to every speaker, mentor, workshop facilitator, showcase exhibitor, teacher, volunteer, sponsor and partner who helped make the day so special.

The future is bright, and we can't wait to see where these young people go next. 🚀
