Thanks to advances in treatment and care, children like Archie can grow, play and thrive in ways that were unimaginable just a generation ago.

Archie had never been hospitalised because of his cystic fibrosis. Then he caught RSV. He developed mucus build-up in his chest, severe coughing fits that ended in vomiting, and struggled to breathe. His family knew it was time to go to hospital.

For many families affected by cystic fibrosis, respiratory infections are never 'just a virus'.

RSV is a highly contagious virus that spreads through coughs and sneezes. While RSV protection is now available for eligible infants and pregnant women, helping to prevent severe illness and hospitalisation, Archie's family were shocked to learn that protection for children like Archie is not funded and can cost up to $300 per dose.

This RSV Awareness Week, Cystic Fibrosis Queensland is supporting calls for people living with chronic illnesses to be included in funded RSV protection programs. Through our Tax Appeal, we are sharing Archie's story to highlight the impact RSV can have on families living with cystic fibrosis and why equitable access to protection matters.

We encourage our community to learn more about the RSV Awareness Week campaign and consider contacting their Federal MP to support equitable access to RSV protection for people living with chronic illnesses and other vulnerable groups.

Join us for Care Circles on the Sunshine Coast!

Thanks to the Black Dog Institute, we are able to bring Care Circles to the Sunshine Coast in July.

The Care Circles program is designed to bring people together in a safe and supportive environment to connect, share experiences and learn from one another. Living with cystic fibrosis can be challenging, and opportunities to meet others who truly understand that journey can make a meaningful difference.

The evening will include practical information and plenty of time to connect with others over food and refreshments. Whether you're living with cystic fibrosis, caring for someone who is, or supporting a loved one, we welcome you to join us.

Date: Thursday 23 July 2026
Time: 5pm
Location: Caloundra RSL

We look forward to creating another opportunity for connection, wellbeing and community with the cystic fibrosis community on the Sunshine Coast.

Almost all children will contract RSV by the age of two.

While many recover at home, RSV is one of the leading causes of hospitalisation for young children in Australia and can be particularly concerning for people living with chronic health conditions like cystic fibrosis.

Archie, a young boy living with cystic fibrosis, had never required a serious hospital admission until he contracted RSV. His experience is a reminder that even with significant advances in treatment, respiratory infections continue to pose a risk for people living with cystic fibrosis. Following Archie's hospitalisation, his family were shocked to learn that RSV vaccination is not funded for people like Archie and can cost up to $300 per dose.

While Australia has made important progress in expanding access to RSV protection, with funded programs now available for eligible infants, pregnant women, adults aged 75 years and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over, many Australians living with chronic health conditions, including cystic fibrosis, remain ineligible for funded protection despite being at increased risk of severe respiratory illness.

Everyone deserves access to protection that helps reduce the risk of severe illness, regardless of their underlying health condition.

We encourage our community to learn more about the RSV Awareness Week campaign and consider contacting their Federal MP to support equitable access to RSV protection for people living with chronic illnesses and other vulnerable groups.

Every voice helps create change.
Together, we can work towards a future where vulnerable Australians have access to the protection they need.

Little Day Out update:

We've loved being able to support our members through the Little Day Out Subsidy Program, helping individuals and families access meaningful experiences that promote wellbeing, connection, respite, and quality time together.

Thanks to the generosity of the HV McKay Charitable Trust, many individuals and families have benefited from this support. The grant funding has now been exhausted – until next time!

Don't forget, members can still access:
• $200 per calendar year through our Physical Activity Subsidy
• $200 per calendar year through our Medical and Parking Subsidy

We're proud to continue supporting our community through these programs and look forward to helping more members access the support available to them.

Thank you to every person who hosted a bake sale, ran a fundraiser, volunteered at a stall, purchased merchandise, made a donation, shared a post, started a conversation, took on the challenge or helped spread awareness in your workplace, school, community or online.

Thank you to the councils, venues and organisations across Australia that supported our community by lighting monuments and landmarks red throughout May. Your support helped shine a light on cystic fibrosis and the thousands of Australians living with the condition.

To our incredible fundraisers – whether you raised thousands of dollars or simply encouraged a few friends to learn more about cystic fibrosis – thank you. Every effort matters, every conversation counts, and every dollar raised helps us continue supporting people living with cystic fibrosis and their families.

Together, you have helped raise funds and awareness, educate others, advocate for change, and show people living with cystic fibrosis that they are not alone.

From all of us at Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, thank you for standing with our community this May.
