This Friday, we’re giving a huge shout out to everyone supporting our 2026 Tax Appeal. 💚

We’re incredibly grateful to have ambassador Ivah sharing his story with our community.

When Ivah was born profoundly deaf, his family turned to Hear and Say 🦋

The listening and spoken language support he received in those early years helped set him up for life — and today he is proudly representing Australia in athletics.

This tax time, your tax-deductible donation can help more families access the early support they choose for their child.

Because every dollar lasts a lifetime.

As we launched our 2026 Tax Appeal last week, it was also the perfect time to welcome our new Fundraising and Community Engagement Manager, Genevieve Atkinson, to Hear and Say.

Founder and Board Member Dimity Dornan AO and CEO Scott Miller were delighted to officially welcome Gen to the team this week.

Genevieve joins Hear and Say with extensive experience across marketing, communications, fundraising and community engagement, working with not-for-profit and community organisations throughout Queensland.

“Even in my first few weeks, I’ve already been incredibly moved by the impact Hear and Say has on children and families,” Genevieve said.

“To sit in on sessions with clinicians, parents and young children and see the life-changing work happening every day is very special.”

"Ivah's story is truly remarkable - nothing has held him back from achieving some massive goals."

As we continue our 2026 Tax Appeal, we look forward to Gen helping strengthen connections with our community, supporters and partners across Queensland. 💙

Meet Ivah. 💙

At just 10 months old, he received his first cochlear implant and began his journey with Hear and Say.

Now 20, he's studying biomedical science, represented Australia at the Deaflympics, and is dreaming of becoming a surgeon. Being born profoundly deaf has never slowed him down.

Over the next few weeks, we're sharing his story and the people who helped shape it.

Today we remember and honour a deeply valued member of the Hear and Say community, Dr John Quayle. A highly respected ENT specialist, John was known not only for his expertise, but for his warmth, generosity, and genuine commitment to improving the lives of children and families.

An early champion of cochlear implants, John played a pivotal role in helping Hear and Say begin its cochlear implant program, opening the door to life-changing outcomes for many children. He served in many capacities, including as a Director on the Hear and Say Board.

Through his advocacy, insight, and encouragement, he helped shape the care and support we provide today and expand what is possible for many children. Those who had the privilege of working alongside him will remember his wisdom, kindness, and quiet dedication to our mission.

His contribution over many years was both significant and deeply valued.

We will miss him greatly, and our heartfelt thoughts are with his family at this difficult time 💙

🌍👂 World Hearing Day — 3 March 2026
From Communities to Classrooms: Hearing Care for All Children 🎧📘

Today we join the World Health Organization in shining a spotlight on hearing care for children around the world. Millions of children aged 5–19 years live with hearing loss, and most cases are preventable or treatable when identified early. Together, we can ensure every child has the chance to hear, learn and thrive.

🧠 Why it matters:
✨ Over 60 % of childhood hearing loss can be prevented with simple public health actions.
🎒 Integrating ear and hearing care into school and community health means early detection, early support and brighter futures.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parents, teachers and health workers all play a role in helping children hear, learn and succeed.

Let’s act now so no child is left behind because of an ear or hearing problem. 💙👂

Stories like this are why we do what we do 💙

Jaradeenah first became a Hear and Say client as a child in Papua New Guinea through our worldwide program. She received a cochlear implant and, with the support of our team, learned to hear sounds and develop her speech. Today, she is in her late 20s, living in Australia and working in aged care as a personal carer

She shared this with us:

“Without my cochlear implant, my world would have been much quieter and more isolating. I wouldn’t have been able to develop clear speech, participate fully in school, or work in the way I do now. It gave me access to sound — but more importantly, it gave me connection, independence, and the ability to build the life I have today. I also dream of becoming a pediatric nurse.”

Messages like this are a powerful reminder of why early intervention and ongoing support matter so much 🦋
Every child deserves the chance to hear, speak and live a life full of connection.

Thank you to our incredible community for helping make stories like Jaradeenah’s possible.

We love seeing the impact of hearing care at every stage of life 💙👂

Peter Dornan, husband of our founder Dimity Dornan, has recently been fitted with new Phonak hearing aids by Anna through our Adult Hearing Program at Hear and Say 🦋

Peter shared, “I can hear perfectly every conversation, music, TV and with the microphone attached to Dimity (pictured), I can hear her anywhere in the house!”
Great hearing isn’t just about sound. It’s about connection, confidence and staying engaged with the people you love.

If you or someone you know could benefit from adult hearing support, our team is here to help. Please call 07 3850 2111 to book your hearing test today
