In a major step for marine conservation, scientists from University of Tasmania have released 65 captive-raised red handfish into the wild to bolster the declining population near Hobart.

“This moment represents an incredible effort by many people over many years. We’ve given the red handfish the best possible chance of survival, and every release helps us learn more and work towards recovering the species,” said marine ecologist Dr Jemina Stuart-Smith, who co-leads the red handfish research and conservation program at the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS).

The whales are on their way back down the coast for the summer in the south!

Eastern Australian humpback whale numbers last year reached at least 50,000 individuals. Why these humpbacks have bounced back quickly and other whales have not is unknown, but having safe havens to give birth and nurse offspring, and less competition for food, may play a part

Once hunted almost to extinction, the population of humpback whales currently migrating down Australia's east coast has bounced back and is now greater than before whaling.
