Last Wednesday night I watched a documentary called 500 Days in the Wildโฆ and I havenโt stopped thinking about it since!
It follows a woman in her 50's, a self-confessed โnon-athleteโ who spent SIX YEARS trekking across the Trans Canada Trail. Yepโฆ six years (which makes the title slightly confusing!๐
).
But what really stayed with me wasnโt just the insane terrain, the wild conditions, or the sheer physical effortโฆ it was her mindset.
Her strength. Her courage. Her resilience.
And one simple line she said:
โWe used to live in a society. Now we live in an economy.โ
It hit.
In simple terms, sheโs talking about how life has shifted.
A โsocietyโ is about people - connection, community, looking out for each other.
An โeconomyโ is about output - productivity, money, efficiency, always doing more, more, MORE!
And somewhere along the way, it feels like weโve tipped a little too far in that direction.
Weโre busy.
Weโre consuming.
Weโre scrollingโฆ endlessly.
We wake up and check our phones.
We fill every quiet moment with noise.
We doom scroll our way through the day until weโve reached the end of the internet....and still feel like weโve missed something.
But have we?
Or have we just drifted further away from the things that actually ground us?
Dianne (from the doco) spoke a lot about reconnecting with nature, with the earth, with ourselves.
And it made me thinkโฆWhen was the last time you:
๐ฟ went outside without your phone?
๐คซ sat in silence without distraction?
๐ฌ had a proper conversation without checking notifications?
๐ง felt present, not pulled in a hundred directions?
This isnโt a rant, weโve all heard it before. But maybe itโs a gentle reminder.
To put the phone down.
To step outside.
To move your body.
To reconnect with the people and the world around you.
Adventure doesnโt always have to be a six year slog across Canada.
Sometimes it just starts with choosing to be present today. ๐ฉต
**Just to add - the doco is actually screening again tomorrow (Sunday 29th March) 3:30pm at Orana Cinemas, and I honestly couldnโt recommend it more!
With the wet and miserable weather weโve got this weekend, itโs the perfect excuse to stay indoors, slow down for a couple of hours, and watch something that might just shift your perspective a little.
