🇦🇺Remembering our Merchant Navy⚓️

Merchant Navy Day remembers the civilians who served on merchant ships in the First and Second World Wars, and is commemorated annually on 3 September. This is the anniversary of the first attack on an Allied merchant ship, which happened within hours of the start of World War II in 1939.

Albany's Merchant Navy Memorial ⚓

The Merchant Navy Memorial was unveiled at the Princess Royal Fortress Military Museum on 11 October 1996 by Major General Michael Jeffery AC MC, Governor of Western Australia.

On the plaque it reads ‘Dedicated to the memory of those men and women of the World’s Merchant Navies. To those wholes lives were lost in peace and war. And whose only grave is the sea.’

It all began on this day in 1914.
Today we remember the start of Australia's First World War journey 🇦🇺

Today marks 112 years since Britain declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914, bringing Australia into the First World War.

In 1914 alone, over 50,000 Australians enlisted to serve in support of Britain — and by the end of the war, more than 400,000 Australians had worn the uniform.

As we reflect on this anniversary, we remember the courage, sacrifice, and enduring impact of those who served — and those who waited at home.

Visit the National Anzac Centre to learn more about Australia's involvement in the First World War and the stories of those who served.

Lest we forget.

Vietnam Veterans' Day Memorial Service 2026

RSL Albany invites the community to a commemorative service honouring those who served in the Vietnam War. The service will be held in the historic surrounds of the Princess Royal Fortress precinct.

Service Date: Sunday, 16 August 2026
Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm (followed by afternoon tea at RSL Albany)
Location: South East Asia Memorial Area, Princess Royal Fortress, Albany
(In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at RSL Albany.)

While Vietnam Veterans' Day is officially commemorated on Tuesday, 18 August, this memorial service will be held on the preceding Sunday to enable the wider community to gather and pay their respects.

This service will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan (18 August 1966), one of the most significant engagements involving Australian forces during the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam War was Australia's longest military engagement of the 20th century, involving nearly 60,000 Australians. Together, we acknowledge the courage, service and sacrifice of all who served, and recognise the lasting impact the war had on veterans, their families and the nation.

All are welcome to attend this special service of remembrance.
