Agnes Water Turtles

Agnes Water Turtles An Agnes Conservation Community (ACC) citizen science project that collects & collates marine turtle nest activity data.

Data is shared with Qld's DES and local agencies helping to inform land management so turtles continue to nest on our beaches

We hear this a lot during nesting season .... Just down the road at Mon Repos! πŸ™ŒπŸΌ Book now for educational and interactive Turtle Encounter Tours ⬇️⬇️

Agnes Water doesn't have high nesting numbers, so chances of seeing a turtle here are low. Also, turtles are easily spooked by people's presence back into the water without laying 😞 Every local nest is precious, so if you love turtles book tickets below πŸ’š. Mon Repos is a very busy nesting beach - you will see turtles πŸ’πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ

Get in early, tickets do sell out!

Safe Haven is one of the rehab centres that takes in sick or insured turtles from Agnes/ 1770. 🐒🐒

This is a great opportunity to support local turtle conservation πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ For a fun afternoon, head down to Baffle Creek Tav and support a local not-for-profit, volunteer, native species wildlife rehabilitation centre. πŸ™ŒπŸΌ

🐒 Another season monitoring marine turtle nesting ends ...

Thank you Agnes Water Turtle and Turtle Action Group volunteers for your dedication patrolling our beaches daily in all weather conditions for the past 5 months πŸšΆπŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘£ πŸ‘€

You walk despite at times soaking rain 🌧️ and wind whipping sand 🌬️ , carefully checking for and recording nest activity, picking up rubbish, talking turtle with beach goers and promoting beach stewardship. You are all legends πŸ™ŒπŸΌ πŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ™πŸΌ

πŸ“£ Big shout out to the Agnes Water Turtle volunteers thst held interactive educational sessions at our local school πŸ™ŒπŸΌ Students learnt about marine turtle threats and ecology, and the role citizen science has in helping turtles 🫢🏼

Thank you too wonderful Agnes beach community for communicating with and supporting us all season. 🧑
See you all next season 🐒

Nesting season is officially over! πŸ™ŒπŸΌ (But here in Agnes we are not quite done yet …)

Huge thank you to everyone who helped protect our turtles this season. πŸ™πŸΌ Specifically to those who respected the dog restrictions on Chinamans and kept their fur babies away from nests on other beaches. 🐾 We noticed your care and appreciate your efforts.πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ

We still have a few nests incubating. Please continue to βœ…οΈ Respect the marked nest sites and give the nests space.

Let’s get those last hatchlings to the water safely. 🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒

🐒🌊 Why Should We Not Touch Sea Turtles?

Sea turtles are highly sensitive wildlife, especially during their early life stages. Hatchlings depend on natural instincts and environmental cues β€” such as moonlight, beach slope, and ocean reflections β€” to safely reach the sea. During this journey, they also begin to imprint the Earth’s magnetic field, which helps them navigate across the oceans and return years later, as adults, to the same beach where they were born to nest.

Human handling, even with good intentions, can cause stress, disorientation, and exhaustion. Physical contact may also transfer bacteria, sunscreen residues, or chemicals that can affect their health and survival.

Only trained and authorized conservation personnel should handle sea turtles when necessary for protection, research, or rescue efforts.

By observing from a respectful distance, we help ensure that hatchlings complete one of the most critical journeys of their lives β€” their first swim into the ocean.

πŸ’š Every action matters.

The turtle trap 🫀 🐒
This morning a juvenile green turtle was trapped in a man made rockpool at 1770. Stranded as the tide receded and unable to climb out, this turtle was at risk of dehydration, fatigue and injury. Luckily, beach walkers noticed the turtle's predicament and contacted us for help.

This is the second time we have been called out to a turtle trapped in a rockpool that people have made at 1770. Community dismantled the last one, and I'm sure this one will be dismantled too to prevent further entrapment. 😞

I'm sure the people that built this structure meant no harm, but let's try to remember that our actions have implications for the diverse lifeforms we share our environment with. Nature doesn't need improving. 🌿

Thanks Rachel, Sue and friends for your concern and help this morning πŸ™πŸΌ.

Here we go again .... High tides, big swell and strong winds 🌊🌊🌊 not great for our turtle nests 🐒

While nests can survive some tidal inundation, beach erosion can expose and wash away entire nests 🫣

πŸ‘€ πŸ‘£ Our volunteers are monitoring our beaches and nest sites, but they can't be there 24/7.

🧐 That's where our awesome community comes in. If you see an exposed nest, please contactπŸ“±0427 358 201

We need the closest beach access, nest marker # and/ or GPS coordinates plus a photo if possible pleaseπŸ™πŸΌ

Authorised volunteers have moved some nests to higher ground but we still have a few nests at risk. Every nest is precious, especially our endangered loggerhead turtle nests.

We appreciate everyone we connect with on the beach and through messages πŸ™πŸΌ

🌊🐒 TURTLE NESTING SEASON = MORE TURTLES OFFSHORE & INCREASED RISK OF BOAT STRIKES

Turtle nesting season has begun - yay! πŸ™ŒπŸΌ
Did you know that marine turtles lay multiple clutches each season? And that females stay in waters near nesting beaches (islands and mainland) between clutches, developing eggs using stored s***m and resting. Turtles surface to breath and are vulnerable to boat strikes that can cause crushing fractures, lacerations and internal injuries.

How to reduce risk
β€’ Slow down and keep a lookout for turtles and other marine life πŸ‘€
β€’ Wear good polarised sunglasses to cut glare to help you spot turtles 😎
β€’ Install a propeller guard to reduce any sharp force trauma

If you accidentally hit a turtle
Wait nearby for at least 30 minutes β€” turtles often dive after a strike, but diving doesn’t mean it’s uninjured. If the turtle shows signs of injury, retrieve it if it’s safe to do so and call 1300 130 372 immediately.

Let’s all do our part to keep our adult turtles safe this season. πŸ’™πŸ’
Remember, only 1 in 1000 hatchlings make it to breeding maturity πŸ™πŸΌ

Photos below are from Quoin Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre and Turtles of Moreton Bay who both do fabulous work rehabilitating and rescuing injured and sick marine turtles
