Raffyโ€™s Wild Hearts has been hit with an overwhelming number of veterinary bills over the past week going into $1000โ€™s, and our funds are now completely exhausted.

After recovering from cat flu and undergoing veterinary care, microchipping, vaccinations and desexing, Wasabi, Paprika and Carolina suddenly took a turn for the worse. Further vet visits revealed they are now battling Mycoplasma felis and have all been started on doxycycline treatment. Unfortunately, doxycycline is expensive, and the costs are adding up very quickly. We are needing more already ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

Paprikaโ€™s desexing was also postponed due to anaesthetic complications, meaning there are still more veterinary expenses ahead.

On top of this, Callie is currently fighting a respiratory infection following her desexing surgery. Thankfully, it isnโ€™t Mycoplasma, but she is now on Noroclav and will remain in our care until she is fully recovered before heading to her forever family.

And as if that wasnโ€™t enough, we recently welcomed a new rescue cat, just before the storm of bills - meet Albert. Albert is a beautiful 11 year old seal point Ragdoll who came into care due to inappropriate urination outside the litter tray. Please note that Albert is not available for adoption, so we kindly ask for no enquiries at this time.

Albert is booked in on Friday for vaccinations and a urinalysis so we can investigate whether there may be an underlying medical reason for his behaviour or if this is behavioral. He been doing this most of his life. We may not be able to fix everything, but we owe it to him to try. Otherwise, it just managing it etc. We will accept him regardless ๐Ÿ’—

To be completely honest, I have reached a point where I can no longer cover these costs from my own pocket. After recently being involved in a car accident, I am also facing an insurance excess that I simply cannot afford right now.

I am overwhelmed, exhausted, and worried about how we are going to get through this. But no matter what, I will keep fighting for these cats.

They are not โ€œjust catsโ€ to me. They are family. They are lives worth saving.

If you can help in any wayโ€”whether itโ€™s a donation, sharing this post, or sending kind words of supportโ€”it would mean the world to us and to the cats depending on us.

โค๏ธ Every dollar helps. Every share helps. Every act of kindness helps.

Thank you for supporting Raffyโ€™s Wild Hearts Rescue.

Meet beautiful Evie โ€” a 6 month old grey & white Domestic Long Hair looking for her forever home ๐Ÿฉถ๐Ÿค

Evie was originally born on the streets to her mum, Winter, but since coming into care she has come out of her shell so much and is showing just how loving and sweet she truly is.

While Evie adores affection, she is still a little timid at times and is continuing to learn that humans are safe and kind. Because of this, Evie would thrive in a quieter home with someone patient and understanding who will allow her confidence to continue to blossom at her own pace.

๐Ÿก No young children please โ€” loud, busy environments can be quite scary for her.

๐Ÿถ Evie is okay with calm dogs
๐Ÿฑ She is also fine with calm feline friends
๐Ÿ‘‘ Although secretly, sheโ€™d love a home where she gets to be the queen of the castle!

Evie has been:
โœ”๏ธ Desexed
โœ”๏ธ Microchipped
โœ”๏ธ Had her 1st vaccination

Some stories stay quiet for a long time โ€” not because they arenโ€™t important, but because sometimes youโ€™re just trying to survive the outcome before you can even put it into words.

Today we want to talk about two intakes weโ€™ve never really spoken about publicly: Callie & Neo. Two tiny kittens who came into our care literally fighting for their lives.

At 3 weeks old, these babies weighed only 85 grams. To put that into perspective, kittens that age should weigh around 300 grams. Honestly, we still donโ€™t know how they survived. We truly believed there was a very real chance they wouldnโ€™t make it, but all we could do was try our best.

There were countless vet trips, endless โ€œfailure to thriveโ€ moments, sleepless nights, and constant worry. Hours turned into days, days into weeks, and eventually months. Every tiny gain felt huge.

Even now, at 6 months old, they remain incredibly small. When we say tiny, we mean tiny โ€” our vets still canโ€™t believe they are the same age as other 6-month-old kittens. Theyโ€™re closer in size to 12-week-old kittens. Despite this, they are healthy, happy, and thriving.

So why are they so small?

Our vets searched hard for answers, but ultimately everything points back to their first few weeks of life.

These kittens came from severe neglect and abuse. Their mother herself was originally a โ€œfree giveawayโ€ kitten who was never desexed and was repeatedly bred for years. As soon as Callie & Neo were born, they were ripped away from their mother because they simply werenโ€™t wanted. They were passed from person to person โ€” treated like disposable objects instead of living beings.

By the time they found their way to us, they were suffering from severe flea infestation, one of the worst worm burdens weโ€™ve ever seen, malnutrition, and weeks of completely incorrect care.

How they survived is honestly beyond us.

But they did.

And now? Neo is living his best life with one of our beautiful vets, while Callie was adopted by a trusted family member. The reality is that while they are healthy now, we canโ€™t guarantee what their long-term health may look like due to the severity of their start in life. Because of that, we knew they either needed to stay with us long-term or be adopted by people we deeply trust, so we can always step in and support them if needed.

And their mum?

She was euthanised by her owners because she could no longer produce kittens ๐Ÿ˜ข

That is the harsh reality behind undesexed cats and โ€œfree giveawayโ€ culture. To some people, animals become disposable once they no longer serve a purpose. This is exactly why rescues fight so hard for desexing, responsible ownership, and ending backyard breeding.

Cats are not disposable. They are living, feeling animals who deserve safety, care, and love. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

Recently, Iโ€™ve seen a lot of misinformation being shared about common feline diseases, and itโ€™s concerning that incorrect information can still circulate within rescue spaces. Accurate education matters โ€” not only for the health of cats, but also to prevent panic, stigma, and harmful misunderstanding.

So hereโ€™s a simple, factual breakdown of some of the most common feline diseases we see in rescue.

โธป

๐Ÿฆ  FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis)

What causes FIP?

FIP develops from a mutation of feline coronavirus (FCoV) โ€” a very common virus, especially in multi-cat environments. Many cats are exposed to FCoV during their lives, but only a small percentage will develop FIP.

Stress, illness, genetics, and weakened immune systems may increase the risk of mutation occurring.

Is FIP treatable?

Yes โ€” FIP is no longer considered an automatic death sentence. With early diagnosis and appropriate antiviral treatment, outcomes have improved significantly.

How is FIP diagnosed?

There is currently no single 100% definitive test for FIP in a living cat. Diagnosis is based on a combination of:

โ€ข Clinical signs
โ€ข Bloodwork
โ€ข Imaging
โ€ข Fluid analysis (if present)
โ€ข PCR or other specialised testing

Blood results such as high globulins or a low albumin:globulin ratio can support suspicion of FIP, but they are not specific to FIP and can also occur with other conditions including:

โ€ข FeLV
โ€ข FIV
โ€ข Toxoplasmosis
โ€ข Severe infection or inflammation

Can calicivirus mutate into FIP?

No โ€” this is incorrect.

FIP only develops from feline coronavirus.

Calicivirus and herpesvirus are completely different viruses and do not mutate into FIP.

If a cat with chronic respiratory disease shows signs such as weight loss, increased thirst, or lethargy, itโ€™s important to investigate other causes as well, including organ disease, diabetes, and other systemic illness.

โธป

๐Ÿคง Calicivirus (FCV)

Calicivirus is a highly contagious viral disease commonly associated with cat flu and oral disease.

Common signs include:

โ€ข Sneezing
โ€ข Nasal discharge
โ€ข Mouth ulcers
โ€ข Drooling
โ€ข Fever
โ€ข Reduced appetite

Some cats may become chronic carriers and experience flare-ups during times of stress.

Diagnosis is usually based on clinical signs and can be confirmed with PCR testing if required.

โธป

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1)

Feline herpesvirus is another very common cause of cat flu.

Unlike calicivirus, herpesvirus more commonly affects the:

โ€ข Eyes
โ€ข Sinuses
โ€ข Upper respiratory tract

Common signs include:

โ€ข Eye discharge
โ€ข Conjunctivitis
โ€ข Corneal ulcers
โ€ข Sneezing
โ€ข Nasal congestion

Like other herpesviruses, infected cats often carry the virus for life and may experience flare-ups during stress or illness.

โธป

๐Ÿฑ Feline Panleukopenia (โ€œCat Parvoโ€)

Yes โ€” feline panleukopenia absolutely exists, and unfortunately it is currently present in parts of South Australia including but not limited -

Mansfield Park, Ottoway, Wingfield, Elizabeth Downs, Elizabeth Vale and Elizabeth Grove. It is also down south but unsure of exact locations.

It is caused by feline parvovirus, which is closely related to canine parvovirus but is species-specific.

Can dogs give parvo to cats?

Yes, Cats can become infected by mutated strains of Canine Parvovirus (CPV), specifically variants CPV-2a, CPV-2b, and CPV-2c. While cats are immune to the original canine strain (CPV-2), these newer variants evolved to infect feline cells. Although overall risk is low. However, humans, clothing, shoes, equipment, and environments can mechanically spread the virus between cats. Think of it like COVID how easily that can spread.

Why is panleukopenia so serious?

It is extremely contagious and can survive in the environment for long periods. It is especially dangerous for kittens and unvaccinated cats.

Signs can include:

โ€ข Vomiting
โ€ข Diarrhoea
โ€ข Fever
โ€ข Lethargy
โ€ข Severe dehydration
โ€ข Sudden deterioration in kittens

Is it currently around in SA?

Unfortunately, yes. Cases have been reported in multiple areas across South Australia. This is why:

โ€ข Vaccination
โ€ข Quarantine
โ€ข Strict hygiene
โ€ข Responsible rescue practices

are all critical in preventing spread.

Thankfully, we have not had any confirmed cases within our rescue to date.

โธป

Luckily, Feline calicivirus, herpesvirus and panleukopenia all covered by the core F3 vaccinations. While the flu side of things are little like our own flu vaccinations and cats can still get flu when vaccinated, the infection is much shorter and milder than in unvaccinated cats. With panluekopenia, vaccinations are the only prevention against cats catching the disease. This is why it's so important to keep your cats up to date with their vaccinations every year regardless if theyโ€™re indoors only!

Please remember:

Not every sneeze is cat flu, not every sick cat has FIP, and accurate diagnosis always requires veterinary assessment. Sharing correct information helps protect cats and prevents unnecessary fear and confusion.

Education saves lives. ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿšจ PLEASE HELP BRING IVY HOME ๐Ÿšจ

This sweet little girl was stolen from her Coringle Street, Hallett Cove home on 19/09/2025 and her family has been desperately searching ever since. ๐Ÿ’”

Yesterday, Ivy turned up at a vet in Seaton where someone attempted to change her microchip details. Thankfully staff recognised she was listed as missing โ€” but the person fled before anything could be done.

Ivy is:
๐Ÿพ Desexed
๐Ÿพ Microchipped
๐Ÿพ Missing a leg (3 legs)
๐Ÿพ Extremely sweet and loved dearly

Her family, especially the children, are absolutely heartbroken. ๐Ÿ˜ข

If you know where Ivy is, or if you have her, please do the right thing. Take her to a vet or contact Michelle on 0424 734 734.

Please share this post everywhere โ€” letโ€™s get Ivy safely back where she belongs. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿค

Remember Toby, Pixie & Jasmine? The little family weโ€™ve been working so hard to rescue? We know so many of you have been waiting for an update and weโ€™re so excited to finally share the good news! ๐Ÿ’›

After weeks of trapping, waiting, worrying and hopingโ€ฆ we successfully caught both mumma and the last kitten! ๐Ÿ™

Beautiful mumma is now named ๐–๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ โ„๏ธ and she was safely trapped last Thursday. Tonight, we finally secured the last little baby, now named ๐€๐ฒ๐ฅ๐š ๐Ÿฑโœจ

Usually we always aim to trap all kittens before mum, however this situation forced us to do the complete opposite. It was stressful not knowing if the final kitten would stay nearby without mum, but thankfully everything worked out exactly how we had hoped โค๏ธ

This rescue definitely tested our patience, but seeing them all finally safe makes every second worth it. Thank you everyone who followed their journey and cheered us on along the way. Another little family safe because people cared ๐Ÿพ

Mumma Winter, Toby, Pixie, Jasmine and Ayla are ๐๐Ž๐“ currently available for adoption.

The kittens will only become available once they are at least 12 weeks old and have had all veterinary work completed, including desexing, microchipping and vaccinations (this is about 6-7 weeks time approx).

Mumma Winter will also be available for adoption once she is ready. Right now, humans are still very scary to her, so she needs time, patience and lots of love to learn she is finally safe ๐Ÿค

If you would like to donate towards our cause so we can help more cats like Winter & her scrumptious little beanie babies details are below โฌ‡๏ธ

Effective immediately, we have unfortunately had to increase our adoption fees due to the continued rise in veterinary costs.

Truthfully, our adoption fees still do not cover the full amount of care each animal receives before going to their new homes. We try our best to keep fees as affordable as possible because we never want cost to stop a loving family from adopting.

All of our cat adoption fees include:
โœ”๏ธ Desexing
โœ”๏ธ Microchipping
โœ”๏ธ 1st Vaccination
โœ”๏ธ Parasite Treatment

At this stage we donโ€™t yet have a set adoption fee list for dogs, rabbits and other animals, but we hope to have one available soon.

We truly appreciate everyoneโ€™s understanding and continued support. Rescue is becoming more expensive every single year, and in reality it costs us well over $350 per cat once vet work, treatments, food, care and supplies are included.

Every adoption fee goes straight back into helping us continue rescuing, rehabilitating and saving more lives. ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ

We need to bring a rally like this to South Australia ๐Ÿ˜ข

As a rescuer my hearts breaks every day out there. We have more cats & kittens then rescues can manage because people donโ€™t desex there cats! Please, the problem will only get worse unless we all act even if every person TNR 1 cat that would make a difference. Please do your part help us stop the cycle to so many community cats in our streets
