A new voice is joining the CLCN Newsroom.

We’re delighted to welcome Professor Chang (PhD) as a Columnist for CLCN Newsroom, bringing research, industry insight and lived international experience to conversations about international student employability in Australia.

Professor Chang is Professor of Information Behaviour and Information Systems at The University of Melbourne, with extensive experience across international education, career mentoring, policy and cross-cultural learning. He works closely with industry to understand the skills employers expect from graduates and is a published researcher on the experiences and information behaviours of international students.

His work includes the co-edited book Digital Experiences of International Students: Challenging Assumptions and Rethinking Engagement, and he previously served as Associate Dean (International) at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.

His contribution to international education has also been recognised with the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA)’s Distinguished Contribution to International Education Award in 2022 and the Noam Chomsky North Star Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 2024.

Born in Kuching and educated across Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, Professor Chang brings both professional expertise and personal perspective to the questions his column will explore.

From employability and workplace expectations to professional development and navigating the transition from international education into professional life, expect research-informed perspectives grounded in the realities international students face.

On the 27th of August, Communication Language & Culture Network (CLCN) attended the annual StudyAdelaide welcome party, where we welcomed new students to as well as old ones looking for a good time.

StudyAdelaide brought students together through a range of live entertainment, food, activities, and plenty of opportunities to connect with different organizations to help them during their time in Adelaide.

AFL teams such as Adelaide Crows and Port Power hosted target shooting for students and a VR set-up that showed a first-person view running with the players on the field.

Food was free and available to anyone from a range of long-time stalls and recent additions such as Italian pizza, Indian Curry, Mexican tacos, Chinese buns, and American burgers, as well as free candy floss and popcorn.

For us, the highlight of the event was the many students who visited our stand. We talked with numerous students, both local and international, who found our stand interesting and worthy of their attention. The students particularly found the conversations on and workplace-ready communication interesting. Many had unique educational skills that they are looking to apply in a workplace environment, and others were looking forward to building confidence in and navigating the expectations of the . All of them were interested in the promise of CLCN, particularly of the new programs such as N+1 and the recently announced Career Launch Program.

All those who volunteered at CLCN did excellent work at the stand and at filming the event. Everyone was polite, respectful, and competent at spreading CLCN's message.

To everyone who visited our stand, asked a question, or learned about Communication Language & Culture Network (CLCN) for the first time – thank you. We hope to see you again within the CLCN community.

We thank StudyAdelaide for inviting us to the welcoming party, and we thank Plant 4 Bowden for hosting the event and providing free food and drink for all participants.

More to come.

often breaks down in small ways.

A task is assigned, but expectations are unclear.
An update is given, but the key point gets lost.
Everyone assumes someone else is responsible.

Clear communication helps teams stay aligned — not just by speaking more, but by making roles, updates and expectations easier to understand.

At WCC #55: Team Communication (Roles, Updates, Accountability), we’ll explore practical ways to:

• Give clearer, more structured updates
• Delegate tasks and set expectations effectively
• Clarify roles, responsibilities and deadlines
• Build stronger accountability and collaboration

These are practical communication skills you can apply in university group projects, volunteering and professional team environments.

Join facilitator Bram Lagrou for an interactive Workplace Communication Club session.
