Hello from Vietnam 👋

Every roof we have worked on so far has had a pitch to it. This one is flat and concrete, it is also the only place we could install on. We could not put the panels on the roof like we usually do, so we built them one instead.

There is a steel frame standing on the deck now, clear of the ground and the walls that would shade it, with the array going on top of it. It was hot out there so Phuong took a moment out of the sun and showed us the installation in action.

Truyen Tin has been running since 1995. Nine of the sisters there are rotating the care of about 25 kids and their electricity bills are about to get a lot lower. Install started yesterday, Yingli panels are up, GoodWe inverter is going on now, the system is almost finished 💛☀️

While filming Global Energy Revolution in Cambodia, John caught up with Peter and Krystian from Little Sunshine Pledge at Sunrise Cambodia.

A food stall and a hair salon. That is what paid for this place at the start.

Sophal's wife was selling food on the street and running the salon, and that income is what kept the whole thing open. So it was never one man doing this on his own, it was two people covering it out of whatever came in that week.

Sophal was a pastor back then. He saw how the kids in his community were living and started bringing them home, one at a time, because they needed somewhere to be.

Now there are 127 of them.

We sat down with him on this trip, Piseth interpreting, and asked a pretty simple question...how long does a kid get to stay? If a baby arrives at one month old, they can stay. Until they finish university.

We said it back to him because we were sure we had misheard 👀

He had not misspoken. He is not looking after 127 kids for a while, he took every one of them on for as long as it takes, and he is still saying yes.

Oh and the electricity here was running 500 to 1,000 US dollars a month before the panels went on. Fridges, water pumps, fans, a kitchen cooking for all the kids. Solar takes a chunk off that every day the sun is out, and the saving goes to food and school supplies.

Which is where he was always going to put it 💛

Sunrise Cambodia decided the day the solar went in was worth putting on a wall.

They got the local community in to help, and kids who studied there years ago came back to get it ready too. Check it out...the school, the panels on the roof, the Cambodian flag, all of it. And then right in the middle of all that, a big empty cloud, left empty on purpose.

That part was for the kids who are there now. Get up there, write what you want to be, or if you can't write yet just put your handprint on it!

And they filled it. Doctor, vet, scientist, someone put IT, their own handwriting and handprints packed in around the words until there was hardly any space left.

So the ones who grew up there got it ready, the ones there now finished it off, and the ones who come after them will always get to see it. One of the special moments from this trip for sure 💛

This is Transform Cambodia. When we were assessing which sites would get the first solar systems in Cambodia, they definitely needed to be one of them.

For 20 years they've been helping local kids break out of poverty, and doing it in a really special way. More than that, they take a kid on knowing they'll be looking after them for the next 13+ years.

The aim is to get these kids an education they wouldn't have had. Not just primary, but secondary too, and pathways into university or a trade if that's what they're into.

Some of these families struggle to pay rent, so keeping a kid in school is a tough call when usually they'd be sent to work as soon as they're old enough. That's where Transform steps in and sends rice home, so nobody has to make that choice.

When we spoke to them, one thing really caught us. They were talking about celebrating milestones, like when the kids graduate, and the families sitting there so moved watching their kid do something they never thought was possible. In those moments it transcends just the child and lifts the whole family.

The proof? A lot of the kids get employed by Transform when they graduate, so they can give back. Others go and finish degrees like medicine, and still come back on weekends for the community that raised them.

That's just a little bit about them, but we're glad we got to tell their story, and to help the centre save on electricity so those funds can go where it matters most 💛

We looked at a lot of places in Cambodia. These three had the stories we most wanted to tell. Every one of them was already running long before we turned up with solar gear.

Sunrise Cambodia you met already, when its meter ticked past its first megawatt-hour. Started by a South Australian in 1993. 377 kids, which makes it the biggest of the three, and sixty of them live there.

New Smile of Hope is a house one man built in his twenties, mostly on his own. 127 kids live in it now.

Transform Cambodia turned 20 this July. Twenty years of paying school fees for street kids, right through to university or a trade, plus food for the families where they can, so the kids stay in school instead of working.

792 kids, three roofs, and three sets of numbers we will be watching for years ☀️

Milestone alert from Cambodia! ☀️

We had every intention of being modest about this one. Sunrise Cambodia has just generated its first megawatt-hour. A thousand kilowatt-hours off their own roof instead of the grid, and yes, we have been checking that number far more often than is strictly necessary 👀

This is our biggest system yet. Panels on a roof are a promise, the numbers on the meter are the receipt. First one down...more megawatt-hours to come for this amazing group of people 💛

The panels got a welcoming committee 🛻

Delivery day at New Smile of Hope Children Association in Cambodia. One truck, a full load of solar gear, and the second it rolled through the gate the kids were at the tailgate ready to help unload...or at least
supervise.

And this was just one of the stops. The same delivery run reached Transform Cambodia and Sunrise Cambodia. Everything is inside and ready for installation. Onto the roof next ☀️
