How long does it take to process a claim?

One of the most common questions we receive is ‘how long will it take for my claim to be processed?’

Every claim goes through several steps before payment can be made. Understanding the process can help explain why timeframes can vary from claim to claim.

1. Worker Applies for Claim through Worker Portal
2. SAPLSL reviews Claim and sends to employer for approval
3. Employer reviews and provides response (approval/decline)
4. If Employer Rejected - SAPLSL reviews and declines the Claim
5. If Employer Approved - SAPLSL process the claim and sets them up for payment.
6. SAPLSL pays the claim

The biggest factor is often how quickly an Employer responds to a claim request and if all the information has been correctly submitted.

We're committed to processing claims as quickly as possible while also ensuring all the requirements have been met. The quicker we receive information, the quicker the claim can be processed.

Eligible employers contribute a levy to the scheme, and those funds are invested to help pay future Long Service Leave benefits and support the administration of the scheme.

That's how we're able to provide portable Long Service Leave benefits, even if you change employers within the community services sector.

Since October last year, South Australia's Portable Long Service Leave - Community Services scheme means workers can build long service leave entitlements across the sector when changing employers. For a workforce known for its mobility and commitment, that's a meaningful change.

If you employ workers in disability, housing, family support, youth, or mental health services, you likely have obligations under the scheme:

✅ Register your organisation
✅ Enrol eligible workers
✅ Submit a quarterly return
