This Mother’s Day, let’s honour Mother Earth while celebrating our own mums, mother figures and the mothers we carry in our hearts.

Instead of flowers, buy her a tree, a living gift that keeps giving. Choose eco-friendly or up-cycled gifts that give back to community or conservation projects or build a thoughtful second-hand thrift bundle of things she’ll actually use. Better yet, make memories: a nature walk, beach walk, a shared picnic and a handmade card she’ll keep forever.

And the best way to honour both your mum and our collective Mother Earth? Volunteer together join a beach clean-up or a dunes greening project and turn love into action.

Painted Dragons were once widespread along Adelaide’s coastline but disappeared a large part of their coastal range with only a handful of isolated populations in the sand dunes north of Tennyson beach. Like many native species it is important to do what we can to conserve and grow populations.

Hear from Tony Flaherty, about the Re-wilding Coastal Dragons Project, and what Green Adelaide is doing to rebuild the population of Painted Dragons along Adelaide’s coastline.

Free event. All welcome.

🥳Soft plastics recycling is back!🥳

While it's great to see recycling return, it is always best to avoid plastic instead. Remember the waste hierarchy and REFUSE, REDUCE or REUSE before you RECYCLE.

If you do end up with some soft plastics, your clean and dry soft plastics can now be dropped off to the dedicated soft plastic recycling bins located at the front of all metropolitan Woolworths stores in South Australia.

If you can't access one of these locations, you can organise a pick up from your house with https://resmart.co/ Otherwise, soft plastics should only be placed in your red/blue landfill bin – never in your yellow recycling bin or green organics bin.

International Compost Awareness Week ICAW (3–9 May 2026) 🌱

This week is all about feeding the soil that feeds us. Composting food scraps and garden waste helps create healthy soil, reduces landfill and cuts harmful methane emissions while supporting more resilient, sustainable communities.

There are simple ways to get involved: start a home compost, join your local FOGO system, or connect with community groups working together to close the loop on organic waste.

In our local area, groups like the Compost Network are helping neighbours share knowledge, build composting skills and keep valuable organic waste out of landfill.

Across Australia, ICAW 2026 will feature workshops, events, and activities (including beginner composting sessions and FOGO initiatives) to help more people take practical action. There’s also a poster and photo competition celebrating the beauty and impact of composting worldwide. You can get involved here: https://www.compostweek.com.au/events/
