AATSA The Association of Australian Tertiary Students from Afghanistan (AATSA) To become a member, please attend the next general meeting.

The Association of Australian Tertiary Students from Afghanistan (AATSA) was officially formed in 2008 in Adelaide and Brisbane. Since then, AATSA has been proudly supporting and encouraging secondary and tertiary students from Afghanistani nationality in Australia. The association aims to promote higher education among youths within the evolving Afghan community; informing students about the stru

cture, functions and pathways of University studies. AATSA endeavours to give youths a voice in this new generation, inspiring students to feel refuged while expressing their opinions, thoughts and ideas. Our members are committed volunteers, acting on the basis of goodwill and compassion, who aspire to realise AATSA’s visions and goals. Keep yourself updated with our social media platforms!

Why I chose to join AATSA:
I always tell myself, If not me, then who? I’ve had a strong desire to give back to my community whether in small or meaningful ways, and I see this as a chance to do just that. With so many opportunities around me, I felt a responsibility to take them, not just to grow personally, but to deepen my empathy and connection with others. I don’t want to look back one day and feel that I didn’t do enough, especially when I had the passion, the potential, and the momentum to make a difference.

Our wonderful event co-ordinator for AATSA 2025 is..

Name: Mahdieh Hezarehei
Degree: Bachelor of Laws with a Bachelor of Criminology
Hobbies: Crafting, journaling, and nail art

Why I chose to join AATSA:
I chose to join AATSA because I saw it as a meaningful opportunity to engage more deeply with the Afghan community and make a positive contribution. As a younger member of the community, I recognise the challenges many Afghan youth face around cultural identity and community involvement. In my role as Event Coordinator, I aim to organise inclusive and engaging events that not only encourage a sense of belonging among the younger generation, but also act as a way to pass on our traditions. I hope that through AATSA, Afghan youth feel more connected to their culture, to one another, and to the broader Afghan community.

Why AATSA:
Joining AATSA is definitely a rewarding decision. AATSA has provided a welcoming environment where by becoming a part of AATSA, I aim to collaborate with like-minded individuals to provide a platform for students to express their opinions, thoughts, and ideas, fostering a sense of community and belonging. I aim to leverage my skills and experiences to further these objectives, ensuring that AATSA continues to support Afghans and Hazaras. In essence, I joined AATSA to build connections, enrich my university experience, and be part of a community that empowers Afghan and Hazara people. I’m extremely eager to be a part of this exciting team and achieve our goals inshallah.

Why I chose to join AATSA:
I chose to join AATSA because I believe in the power of community, connection, and youth-driven change. AATSA represents more than just a student association, it is a space where young people come together to uplift one another, celebrate culture, and drive meaningful initiatives that benefit not only the Hazara and Afghan communities, but the wider society as well. Joining AATSA allows me to help create a supportive environment where people from all walks of life and ethnicity, feel empowered, safe and seen. I also hope to form long-lasting friendships, learn from others, and grow both personally and professionally. With my background in law, I am passionate about advocacy and justice, and I look forward to using these skills to support AATSA’s mission.
