Friends of Sturt River Landcare

Friends of Sturt River Landcare News and events for members, volunteers and supporters of Friends of Sturt River Landcare Inc. We have ‘adopted’ Oaklands Wetland as our first site. Aims
1.

located in City of Marion and City of Holdfast Bay, South Australia. The Sturt River corridor contains the only remaining vestiges of the original native woodland forests of this part of the Adelaide Plains. These open spaces with their remnant native plants, birds and animals, provide us with a sense of connection to a unique and valued place, comprising much of the history, identity and amenity

of the Sturt River (also called Warripiri by the Kaurna people). The corridor around the creek line, while much altered, presents a sanctuary for the community of people, plants and animals who now live here. It provides us with a green space to regularly enjoy nature in order to restore ourselves and become happier, healthier people. It is also a haven of local biodiversity in an increasingly built up urban landscape. It represents the best of the few remaining opportunities we have to understand how to restore, enhance and protect areas of local habitat for native insects, birds and animals so that they can continue to live among us. As a shared, community open space it is meaningful and important in the lives of residents and visitors alike. However modified, this remains a living place; worthy of our care, respect and stewardship for the unique values of habitat and heritage that it represents to us and those who will come after us. Friends of Sturt River Landcare was set up in 2014 to care for the lower part of the Sturt River, particular those areas of the Adelaide plains not currently covered by the Warriparinga Wetlands friends group. The friends aim to provide on-going stewardship for the Sturt River corridor and its surrounding parks and reserves. As a not-for-profit organisation the aims of the group are set within its Constitution. Membership is open to all members of the public who agree with the aims of the organisation and its objects. To maintain, restore and re-establish native biodiversity within the Sturt River corridor, surrounding parks and reserves.
2. To create a community of people who are willing and able to work together to care for and conserve this area in perpetuity. These aims to be carried out for the benefit and enjoyment of residents and visitors alike, both now and into the future.

Sharing a couple of photos of the native orchid planting trial at Oaklands. The 20 Pterostylis curta plants were propagated by the Native Orchid Society of SA (NOSSA) and planted by Friends of Sturt River Landcare in partnership with City of Marion.

These native orchids are classified as rare in the wild with numbers declining, but also one of the easier ones to propagate. We are trialing three locations at Oaklands Reserve with success determined by how many survive until Spring, number flowering, number of seed pods and self-propagation. These orchids die back during October – November and re-appear again in about April.

The rain gets them off to a good start.

Please register for World Environment Day on 7th June, from 10am with City of Marion. This is our biggest community planting day with 6,500 plants to go in along the Sturt River-Warriparri. Meet at the rear carpark at Oaklands Reserve, then cross the river to continue planting the grassland we've been creating under established gums to bring back biodiversity to this stretch of the river. Once planting is finished, the Lions Club will have cooked us a free BBQ. Registering will help with catering numbers for sausages and veggie patties. It's a fun day, come and join in for as long as you can. Please register here: https://events.humanitix.com/world-environment-day-planting-event-with-friends-of-sturt-river-landcare

Wow, look what Andrew found while weeding at Oaklands Reserve on Sunday - a 4 foot-long crosscut saw, probably left behind many years ago by a wood cutter. The medallion on the handle, with WARRANTED SUPERIOR and Dieu et Mon Droit with lion & crown markings, indicates that it was made in Sheffield between about 1880 and 1920, over 100 years ago!
It's likely to find a place in the Marion Village Museum.

Thank you to everyone who came out in the beautiful weather yesterday.

Groups and Associates Shout Out: Friends of Sturt River Landcare

The Friends of Sturt River Landcare work hard to restore and reconnect the green heart of Wariparri (Sturt River). For over a decade, their volunteers have been planting native seedlings, building a green corridor along the Lower Sturt River, boosting biodiversity and making our local suburbs healthier and cooler.

Keep up the great work! 💚
