At our AVGG meeting last Thursday, we held our first Mini Show! Barbara, our resident judge, carefully critiqued members’ plants and shared some valuable tips for achieving better symmetry and floral perfection. Pictured are (1) Barbara in judging mode (2) Bev with her mini show-winning ‘Bob Serbin’ and (3) AVGG President Mark, who presented a short talk on different watering options. It was a fun and informative morning with plenty for everyone to learn.

🌸 Shining the Spotlight on Lighting…

At our last very successful Grow & Show event entitled “How to Make Your African Violets Flower Beautifully”, we explored the key ingredients for success: lighting, watering, and potting mix. This session sparked so much interest, we will be delving more deeply into these topics in upcoming Grow & Show sessions, starting with LIGHTING with Michele Bain (SA) and Sarah Alex (QLD) straight after our special Chimera presentation. Don't miss it!

Have a look at the size of this African violet! 😲🌸
One of our newest members, Julie, brought this absolute giant along to our 21 May meeting, where Bev demonstrated how to separate and repot it (pictured). Hidden beneath all that foliage were two enormous crowns, making it the perfect hands-on learning opportunity. It was an excellent demonstration and a great reminder that even the biggest, most impressive violets occasionally need a little attention to keep them growing and flowering at their best. Thanks to Julie for bringing it along and to Bev for sharing her expertise!

Our first online ‘Grow & Show’ event was a great success last night, and we were delighted to welcome a wonderful group of avid AV aficionados (try saying that fast) from SA, NSW, VIC… and even Florida, where it was 5:30am. Now that’s dedication! We’d love to see more of you at our next online session, or in person at our Adelaide catch-up on 21 May, where we’ll be dissecting the biggest African violet you’ve ever seen. Pictured here… me (Michele) during last night’s online repotting demo.
