Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, yet it often receives less attention than CO₂. Today, it is not only a critical energy resource for industry and society but also a key opportunity: with innovative technologies, we can transform methane from a climate challenge into a source of clean, low-emission hydrogen.

In our latest video, we explain the fundamentals of methane: its properties, how it is formed, and its impact on the climate.

We also present our approach using plasma methane pyrolysis to convert methane into hydrogen and solid carbon, enabling hydrogen production with the potential for zero CO₂ emissions.

Revealing what the eye can’t see 🔬

As part of our process development, we regularly visit the Faculty of Physics at the Vienna University to use the scanning electron microscope (SEM) for our investigations.
We analyze carbon black, red mud samples from deposits as well as samples from our own processes down to the smallest detail: examining fragments and their composition to gain a precise understanding of the material structure. ⚙️

Magnifications of up to 100,000x reveal structures at the nanometer scale.
Unlike in an optical microscope, the image in an SEM is formed by secondary electrons that are released or scattered from the sample’s surface when the primary beam hits it, revealing even the tiniest structural details. 3D features remain sharp, allowing realistic surface visualization. SEM imaging provides detailed insights into structure, fracture surfaces, corrosion, porosity, and more. With integrated EDS/EDX spectroscopy, the elemental composition of selected areas can be precisely determined. 🧪

These insights are crucial for us, because they demonstrate not only: 📈
• how effectively our processes perform,
• which industrial applications could arise from them,
• and provide solid arguments for the further development and application of our technology.

It proves: Those who understand the smallest structures can unlock the greatest potential. 💡

🌍 Shahed Abbasi sooha, our Process Engineer for Waste Pyrolysis, shared important insights at the V2025 Conference organized by the European Society of Thin Films (EFDS) in Dresden.

♻️The presentation highlighted urgent global waste challenges and the transformative potential of decentralized, plasma-assisted treatment.

⚡By converting municipal waste from an environmental burden into an energy resource with significant CO₂ reduction, the PlasmaSun solution offers a scalable pathway toward decarbonized, circular waste management.

From Les Baux-de-Provence to the Future of Aluminum Production

In 1821, geologist Pierre Berthier discovered a remarkable raw material in Les Baux-de-Provence: BAUXITE – the foundation of aluminum.
This discovery reminds us today: true progress begins with a careful look at nature, where challenges and solutions coexist. 🌱

At Ermafa Environmental Technologies, we build on that insight.
Within our RedRec Department, we are developing a process to safely neutralize the highly alkaline by-product of aluminum production, red mud, rich in sodium hydroxide, and return it to the industrial cycle as a valuable resource. 🔄

Our goal: respect natural cycles, close the loop of aluminum production, secure raw materials and dramatically reduce environmental impact. 🌍

Working side by side, our team develops technologies that prove:
Those who observe nature closely don’t just discover raw materials, they understand its cycles and unlock the key to innovations that preserve resources. 💡

Did you know that the word “Plasma” comes from Ancient Greek?

The term Plasma literally means:
"the formed, the created, or the shapeable substance"
and is derived from the verb πλάσσειν (plássein), which means:
"to form, shape, mold, or create."

At Ermafa Environmental Technologies, we develop plasma torches that break carbon chains at temperatures over 5000°C. 🔥

In doing so, we embrace the original meaning of Plasma: we shape and mold the molecular structure of materials, true to the Ancient Greek idea of “plássein.” 💡

For us, plasma is not just a physical state, it is a symbol of innovation, adaptability, and engineering creativity. 🦾

Bauxite – the raw material where aluminium begins ⚙️

Bauxite contains not only aluminium minerals but also iron and clay minerals.
Through the extraction of aluminium oxide, it becomes the foundation of global aluminium production. 🌍

The aluminium oxide content typically ranges between 30% and 60% – depending on deposit, geology, and processing.

But with aluminium production comes a massive challenge:
👉 Red mud – a highly toxic by-product.
It contains iron oxides, residual aluminium salts, and sodium hydroxide. The latter is highly caustic, making safe disposal a global environmental challenge. ☢️

This is where we at Ermafa Environmental Technologies step in:
We are developing solutions to treat red mud sustainably and efficiently, aiming to significantly reduce the ecological footprint of aluminium production. 💚

Because we believe: economic success and environmental protection must go hand in hand. 🌱
