Most people associate plasma either with blood plasma in medicine or with plasma in physics and industry. But how did it come to be that both share the same name?

Plasma is encountered more often than many people realize. It is the most common state of matter in the universe and can be found, among other places, in the sun, stars, and lightning. ☀️

Today, through decades of research and technological development, we are able to replicate this natural phenomenon in a targeted way, control it, and, as we do at Ermafa Environmental Technologies, make it usable in industrial process applications using plasma torches. 🔥

We take a look at the history of the term “plasma,” from its origins in medicine to its transfer to ionized gas, which today forms the basis of our modern PlasmaSun technology.

Methane plays an important role in today’s energy landscape. While methane, like other fossil fuels, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, it also has certain properties that can be viewed positively in comparison. These include its high energy density and comparatively clean combustion characteristics.

✅ High energy content
With approximately 50–55 MJ/kg, methane has an energy density that is higher than that of gasoline (approx. 42–44 MJ/kg) and diesel (approx. 43 MJ/kg).

✅ Clean combustion
During combustion, methane primarily produces CO₂ and water. Compared to many other fossil fuels, it results in significantly lower levels of soot and virtually no sulfur compounds.

✅ Efficient energy carrier
Its high energy density supports efficient energy delivery and represents an advantage compared to some other fossil fuels.

In a time when efficiency, resource conservation, and emissions reduction are becoming increasingly important, energy carriers should always be assessed in a holistic way; from energy density to combustion behavior.

In May 2026, we had the pleasure of welcoming numerous visitors to our joint booth at IFAT and engaging in many inspiring conversations about sustainable environmental technologies.

A special “thank you” goes to our colleague Laura, who represented us on-site with great dedication in her role as Project and Product Manager. With her expertise, passion for innovative technologies, and approachable personality, she became the go-to contact for many visitors at our booth. 🤝

In the interview, Laura shares insights into her focus on PlasmaSun and explains why the development of sustainable technologies is more important today than ever before. Global uncertainties, our dependence on fossil fuels, and the growing impact of climate change highlight the urgent need to explore new approaches and actively address existing challenges.

As a research- and development-driven company, we are committed to developing solutions for real-world environmental challenges every day. Our goal is to advance sustainable technologies, contribute to the reduction of CO₂ emissions, and help create a more sustainable future for generations to come. 🌱

Without bauxite, there is no aluminium, bauxite is the primary aluminium ore and the key raw material for industrial aluminium production. It forms through the weathering of aluminium-rich rocks in tropical and subtropical climates.

📍 Key global deposits:
Australia, Brazil, Guyana, Jamaica, and China are among the largest producers.

In Europe, bauxite deposits can also be found in:
France, Greece, Hungary, Croatia, Montenegro, as well as parts of Eastern Europe, including Russia & Ukraine.

During the processing of bauxite using the Bayer process, a by-product called red mud (bauxite residue) is generated.
This material is:
• highly alkaline, with a high pH value
• rich in iron oxides, which give it its red colour
• produced in large volumes as an industrial by-product
👉 Worldwide, several million tonnes of red mud are generated annually.

We are currently working on understanding red mud not as waste, but as a resource.
Our focus includes:
• the recovery of valuable components
• the development of new valorisation approaches
• the long-term reduction of environmental impacts

Following the treatment of bauxite residue using the RedRec process, two fractions are obtained: a heavier, iron-enriched fraction and a lighter, iron-depleted fraction. The lighter fraction is further processed by blending it with carbon-rich materials such as pyrolysis coke and, in future applications, biochar, to create tailored substrate mixtures.

These mixtures are currently being tested in plant growth experiments, with the goal of reducing soil erosion and improving the environmental condition of bauxite residue storage facilities (BRSFs) through phytoremediation.

Against this background, our team attended the Biochar Summit 2026 in Vienna. The event provided an excellent platform to discuss current developments in biochar, carbon dioxide removal, and sustainable soil and material applications with international experts from science, industry, and practice. 🤝

The visit was particularly valuable for gaining deeper insight into the current scaling of biochar technologies, exploring new approaches for their use in bioremediation, and building meaningful connections across the full value chain. 🌱

Several departments of Ermafa Environmental Technologies, including Electrotechnics and PlasmaSun, had the opportunity to attend the MSR-Spezialmesse in April, one of the leading trade fairs for measurement, control, and automation technologies.
The insights we gained went far beyond a traditional trade fair visit. They allowed us to take a deeper look at current industry developments and challenges, helping us better understand which technologies, capabilities, and innovations will be essential in the years ahead. These valuable insights support us in continuously advancing our own solutions. 🤝
A sincere thank you to all participants and organizers for the valuable discussions and exchange of ideas. We are taking home many perspectives and inspirations that will contribute to our technologies. 🌱

At IFAT, we had the opportunity to present our forward-looking technologies to an international expert audience. A special thank you goes to our colleague and project lead Bilgehan, Head of the PlasmaSun team. 🤝

As a key contact at our booth, he held numerous technical discussions and provided visitors with deep insights into the potential of our plasma technology. His expertise and commitment played a crucial role in clearly communicating this innovative research and development project.

PlasmaSun focuses on plasma pyrolysis and the splitting of methane into hydrogen and carbon black. In addition, the technology enables the environmentally friendly conversion of waste into valuable synthesis gas (syngas). The goal is to break down materials on a molecular level and open new pathways toward a sustainable circular economy, resource-efficient raw material recovery, and climate-friendly energy production. 🌱

Developing such technologies is highly complex and comes with significant challenges. This makes a strong team even more essential, one that works with passion, expertise, and perseverance to shape future solutions.

In the video, Bilgehan provides exciting insights into the technology behind PlasmaSun and the various projects currently being advanced within this R&D field.

A gas with enormous energy potential, widely used across industries and at the same time up to 84x more climate-impactful than CO₂. ⚡
This tension makes methane one of the most important energy topics of our future.

In our new video, we take a closer look at methane’s key properties, its role in today’s energy system, and why it may hold surprising potential for future climate solutions. 🎥
