Since 1989 Europan has acted as an international platform in Europe and one of the world´s largest competitions, including follow-up implementation, which brings together European cities and young international professionals under the age of 40 in architectural, urban, and landscape design. Europan is a European federation of national structures that, every two years, simultaneously organizes the

competition, which is accompanied by international forums, exhibitions, and events. Around 50 European cities and over 2000 international teams participate in each session.

WE HAVE NEWS!
Our Team grew and these are the people behind Europan Austria now.

We are pleased to introduce the new General Secretaries of Europan Austria: welcome Christina Lenart and Ernst Gruber!

The two Vienna-based architects with international backgrounds are taking over the management with immediate effect. Both have long been familiar with Europan and its many facets and are now looking forward to being part of shaping the future of this European architectural culture initiative.

Hannah Nusser remains part of the Secretariat, overseeing organisational matters, while Clara Maria Fickl continues to lead social media and communications.

At the moment we are already preparing for the next Europan Competition, which will take place in 2027. Stay tuned!

Taking another look at last edition's awarded Projects. This is one of the two awarded Runner Up Teams with their project "Landscape of Havens"

Congratulations to
and the whole Team.

JURY STATEMENT:
The project develops the idea of the L202 as an infrastructure of care into a poetic yet systematically structured proposal. The road is conceived as a sequence of “havens” — spatial harbours of calm, encounter, and resource sharing — interweaving ecological, social, and mobility-related qualities within a coherent framework.
This metaphor is convincingly translated into strategic guidelines and concrete spatial interventions along the axis. Twelve distinct havens form a structured Catalogue of Havens, in which each intervention — green, blue, or social — responds precisely to its local context.
Along the L202, multimodal mobility hubs, new cycling and walking connections, and landscape spaces emerge, enhancing climate resilience and the overall quality of public life. The project’s methodological clarity is remarkable: from conceptual framework to street section, it demonstrates strong coherence and a consistent design language.
Particularly noteworthy is the thorough analysis of the region’s industrial and cultural history. By integrating local production traditions — from textiles to engineering — into a sustainable spatial strategy, the proposal bridges heritage and future. Ecological themes such as microclimate, flood-prone zones, and noise mitigation are equally well addressed through a robust nature-based approach.
While it remains open whether the metaphor of the “haven” fully captures the dynamic complexity of the transformation, the project stands out as a poetic yet analytically sound contribution — carefully developed, coherent, and inspiring as a vision for the future of the L202.

Taking another look at last edition's awarded Projects. The winning Team LLUMAA with their project "Recode the Road"

Congratulations to

JURY STATEMENT:
Instead of proposing a linear sequence of interventions along the L202, the project introduces a broad, geographically informed reading of the entire region. By working with the analytical layers “solid,” “fluid,” and “biotic,” it succeeds in interpreting the territory across the dividing road as a coherent network of ecosystems connected through soil conditions, watercourses, and habitat structures. The project’s central document — the new regional map — does not depict the status quo, but rather a condition in which these connections are uncovered, strengthened, and newly interpreted. Building on this foundation, the project formulates a vision that transforms the road space into a diverse habitat where different modes of mobility coexist, primarily conceived as a rich threshold space that no longer divides but connects. Taking another look at last edition's awarded Projects. This is one of the two awarded Runner Up Teams with their project "Pinch me! L202 just woke up..."

Congratulations to

JURY STATEMENT:
The project convinces with its ambitious approach to transforming the heavily traffic-burdened L202 into a “Climate Street” — a road that is no longer a barrier but becomes the connective backbone of climate-responsive regional development.
With a finely calibrated system of three intervention types — Tree Bridge, Green Bay, and Common Ground — the team proposes efficient, small-scale, and transferable measures capable of achieving significant impact with limited means.
Particularly noteworthy is the concept of a continuous green-blue infrastructure along the axis. Landscape corridors and street modules link ecological and social spaces, opening new cross-connections between key locations. In this way, the road becomes a place of exchange between mobility, nature, and community.
The team skilfully translates the challenges of the focus areas into spatial strategies: micro-centres along the L202 combine living, working, services, and leisure, while new squares, courtyards, and Common Grounds serve as social anchor points that strengthen the public realm.
While the urbanistic strategies and procedural proposals are clearly articulated and convincing — especially the emphasis on inter-municipal cooperation and participatory development — the traffic-related and landscape measures remain partially abstract. The notion of the “Climate Street” is introduced atmospherically, but its concrete spatial and design implementation could be further refined.
Overall, the project demonstrates a strong understanding of the need for collective transformation and lays a compelling foundation for a regionally anchored development process that can serve as an exemplary model for comparable infrastructure corridors.

Award Ceremony St.Gallen
EUROPAN Suisse & EUROPAN Austria
12-2025

Looking back at the Europan 18 award ceremony in St. Gallen, where delegates, site representatives, and many participating and awarded teams came together to celebrate the competition. Winning teams from three sites in Switzerland and one site in Austria were honoured. Continuing a small tradition, the awards were accompanied not only by certificates and, of course their prize money, but also by local specialities: Swiss chocolate for the Swiss sites and a regional white wine from Austria as a small gift to take home.
With teams travelling from countries such as Italy, Germany, France, and Slovenia, the evening highlighted Europan’s core idea as a cross-border competition. The ceremony took place within the exhibition space, surrounded by a wide range of submitted projects—creating a dense and diverse display of drawings, ideas, and approaches.

19:30 Closing of the event, followed by an aperitif

The panel discussion brought together Regula Lüscher (former Senate Building Director of Berlin and Jury Chair), Viviane Feichtinger (State of Vorarlberg), Florian Kessler (City of St. Gallen), Pascal Hunkeler (City of Lucerne), Panos Mantziaras (Canton of Geneva), and Mathias Heinz (Europan Suisse), representing a broad range of perspectives from planning, administration, and the Europan network. The discussion was moderated by Marcel Bächtiger.

E18 / RUNNER UP / THE LANDSCAPE OF HAVENS

By framing the L202 as an infrastructure of care, this proposal shifts the focus from traffic flow to shared living environments. A series of carefully designed havens reconnect fragmented territories while addressing climate resilience, heritage, and everyday use. The jury values the project’s consistency, depth of analysis, and its thoughtful balance between metaphor and spatial strategy.
