The xenophobic attacks in Durban are not just a local crisis, they expose a deeper, structural failure at the continental level that can no longer be ignored.
While African lives are being targeted on African soil, the African Union once again appears distant, silent, and ineffective. How can we continue to speak of integration, free movement, and “African unity” when, in reality, Africans are unsafe within their own continent?
The lack of decisive mechanisms, rapid response, and political accountability reveals an uncomfortable truth: Pan-African ideals are being undermined not only by the violence on the streets, but by the inaction of our institutions.
If the African Union cannot uphold the most basic principle, the dignity and safety of African people, then what is its real purpose?
Africa does not need more statements. It needs leadership, political courage, and concrete action.
Institutional silence is also a form of complicity.
