We're happy to welcome Namor Votilav to the team as Artaxis curator, bringing a sharp eye and deep knowledge of Armenia's evolving art scene.

Artaxis is a community-sustained project. The map is only as good as the people who contribute to it. If you know about an event, add it. If you spot something missing, flag it. This map belongs to everyone who cares about art in Yerevan.

We started with a small list and ended up with something much bigger than we expected.

In just 3 days, this grew from 18 to 57 spaces, not because we “collected” them, but because people showed up, shared, corrected, added, and expanded it together.

This publication tries to hold that collective effort.
Not institutions, but what actually sustains a scene, the in-between spaces, the overlaps, the temporary and the persistent at once.

It’s not a directory.
It’s one way of mapping a living ecosystem.

Huge thank you to everyone who contributed, especially Areg Arakelyan, Karin Grigoryan, and Namor Votilav. This wouldn’t exist without you.

The dataset is open and ongoing.
If something is missing, it probably is.

What does an art ecosystem actually look like when you map it?

Not metaphorically, but structurally.

This is a snapshot of independent cultural spaces and initiatives, drawn from our open dataset.
A living system made visible through relationships, timelines, and shared conditions.

Some quick signals:

• 51 spaces mapped
• 94% currently active
• Average lifespan: 10 years
• 30 unique categories shaping the field

What emerges isn’t stability. Its density, overlap, and constant transformation.

This is not just data.
It’s a way of understanding how cultural ecosystems sustain themselves beyond institutions.
