On April 24, we remember the lives lost in the Armenian Genocide and honor the compassion that emerged in response.
On this day in 1915, authorities in the Ottoman Empire began arresting and executing Armenian leaders in Constantinople, marking the onset of the Armenian Genocide. In response, U.S. citizens came together to form Near East Relief—the predecessor of today’s Near East Foundation—to provide life-saving aid to survivors and displaced families.
From that moment, a legacy of humanitarian action was born. For more than a century, that legacy has continued through efforts to support communities facing crisis, rebuild livelihoods, strengthen resilience, and expand pathways to stability across Armenia, the Middle East, and Africa.
April 24 is a day of remembrance, but also a reminder of the enduring responsibility to stand with communities affected by violence, displacement, and hardship.
We honor those who were lost, and we recognize the compassion and solidarity that continue to inspire humanitarian action today.
