On this solemn day of remembrance, the Open Borders Institute of Peace, Democracy and Development honors the memory of the 1.5 million Armenians who perished during the Armenian Genocide.
April 24 is not only a day of mourning, but also a call to conscience. We remember the victims, we honor the survivors, and we reaffirm our collective responsibility to stand against denial, injustice, and hatred in all its forms.
As an organization committed to peace, democracy, and human dignity, we believe that acknowledgment of the past is essential for building a just and inclusive future. Remembering is not only about history, it is about preventing the repetition of genocides and fostering a world grounded in truth, accountability, and respect for human rights.

We remember. We reflect. We commit to never again.

Today, 21 April 2026, marks the first-ever International Day of Women in Industry — a moment to recognize the vital role women play in shaping industrial development, innovation, and sustainable economic systems worldwide.

At OBI, we believe that empowering women is not only a matter of equality, but a driver of resilient institutions, inclusive economies, and lasting peace.

Yet, women remain underrepresented across key sectors — particularly in advanced manufacturing, digital transformation, green innovation, and leadership. These gaps are often reinforced by unequal access to skills, finance, and professional networks.

Closing these gaps is essential. Stronger participation of women in industry means stronger, more adaptive systems — better equipped to respond to global challenges and to build inclusive growth across regions.

Through our work in gender-responsive governance, economic participation, and cross-border cooperation, OBI continues to support pathways for women to lead, innovate, and transform industries.

Today, on International Women's Day, we recognise the strength, resilience, and leadership of women around the world.

At Open Borders Institute, we believe that real change happens when commitments to women’s rights are supported by systems that protect dignity, ensure justice, and expand opportunity.

Over the years, our team and partners have worked to support women in crisis and strengthen the institutions that serve them.

Through our programmes we have:

• Provided legal, psychological, and economic support to survivors of gender-based violence
• Assisted displaced families affected by regional crises
• Delivered Gender Justice Academies for police officers, prosecutors, civil society representatives, and media professionals
• Promoted women’s economic participation through entrepreneurship and cross-border cooperation initiatives

International Women’s Day reminds us that progress is built through collaboration, strong institutions, and communities that stand together.

We remain committed to advancing gender justice, protection, and economic opportunity, ensuring that women and girls are able to live, work, and lead with dignity and security.

Statement from Open Borders Institute

We are deeply saddened by the devastating reports of the bombing of a girls’ school in Iran, which has resulted in the tragic loss of more than 165 young lives and injuries to many others.

Schools must always remain places of safety, learning, and hope. When educational spaces are attacked, it is not only individual lives that are lost, but the future of entire communities that is placed at risk.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected, to the students and educators, and to all those whose lives have been altered by this tragedy.

At Open Borders, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the protection of women and girls, the safeguarding of educational institutions, and the strengthening of systems that prevent violence against civilians. The protection of children and access to safe education are fundamental principles that transcend politics and borders.

We stand in solidarity with all communities working to ensure that schools remain spaces of dignity, security, and opportunity.

As we close out the year, our team feels deeply grateful for the community that has sustained our work for the past 9 years.
Your partnership and solidarity make it possible for us to stand with refugee women and girls, displaced families, and survivors of violence—not once, but consistently, when support matters most.
As we prepare for the year ahead, we invite you to continue accompanying us on this journey. Your contribution—whether through partnership, advocacy, or a year-end donation—helps ensure that care, protection, and justice remain accessible to those who need it most.

Proud announcing at the end of the year that our project Academy for Gender Justice was shortlisted among the leading social impact projects at the Project Management Institute Armenia’s Project Management Awards.
Our project stood alongside multi-million-euro initiatives implemented by major national and international institutions — a meaningful recognition of the quality, impact, and leadership behind our work.
What makes this particularly important for us is that our project was developed and delivered with a lean budget, strong strategic leadership, and a clear vision for sustainability and continuation.
This recognition confirms that high-quality, mission-driven work can compete at the highest level, regardless of scale.
Grateful for the opportunity to represent women-led leadership and social impact alongside some of the region’s most established organizations.

Today, on Human Rights Day, we honour the courage of women, girls, and human rights defenders who continue to seek dignity, safety, and justice — often across borders, conflict lines, and systems that fail them.
At Open Borders Institute, we work every day to ensure that:
survivors of violence find safety and support,
women can claim their rights without fear,
justice institutions become more responsive and humane,
cross-border cooperation strengthens peace and dignity rather than dividing communities.
Human rights are not theoretical commitments.
They are everyday choices — to protect, to listen, to stand with those at risk.
Today we recommit to that work.
Human Rights belong to everyone.
Everywhere. Always.

Joint initiative: Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Armenia × Office of the Human Rights Defender × Open Borders NGO.

On 7 October in Gavar, the Embassy-supported film “Congratulations, It’s a Girl” was screened, followed by a panel with Ambassador Marieke Monroy-Winter, Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan, MP Lilit Stepanyan, and Eleonora Begoyan, President of the Open Borders Institute.

Our role. Open Borders works to prevent gender-based violence and support survivors. We view sex-selective abortion as one manifestation of GBV, often driven by reproductive coercion and social pressure. In the panel, Eleonora Begoyan spoke about the issue’s impact on demographic balance, human capital, and social cohesion, and proposed practical steps:
• non-punitive counseling and safe referrals in health services,
• community awareness and dialogues that affirm “a girl = value,”
• transparent monitoring and reporting of sex-ratio trends.
We thank our partners for the collaboration. Open Borders stands ready to continue the intersectoral work needed to put these steps into practice.

🇦🇲 Remembering Artsakh
Two years ago today, Azerbaijan began the final forced displacement of Armenians from their ancestral homeland of Artsakh.
This was not only a human tragedy, but also a reminder of the urgent need for stronger systems of protection, accountability, and prevention of mass atrocities. Families were uprooted, communities erased, and a centuries-old cultural presence forced into exile.
At Open Borders Institute, we stand in solidarity with all displaced people, and we reaffirm our commitment to:
🔹 Advocate for justice and accountability for crimes of forced displacement.
🔹 Support survivors with dignity, security, and pathways to rebuild their lives.
🔹 Work for sustainable peace in Armenia, the South Caucasus, and beyond.
Memory is not only about the past — it is also a responsibility for the future. We will continue to speak, act, and build systems that ensure such tragedies are never repeated.
