1998, that’s when she first answered the call. Then she just kept answering it.
Rescue One is retired. 27 years on the water, countless missions, and more lives protected than we can put a number on. Rescue Three is here now, and the work continues.

Thank you, R1. 27 years on the team. Not bad.

Some searches close in hours. This year’s longest didn’t.
When a vessel went overdue and the operation stretched past 31 hours, CalvinAir kept aircraft in the air alongside our team. That’s not a one-time thing. It’s been the pattern on every major SAR launch this year. And for years before that.
Behind the flights is the Calvin Ayre Foundation. The support that makes sustained response possible.

Years of partnership. Real presence when it counted.
Thank you, CalvinAir and the Calvin Ayre Foundation. 🇦🇬

Ros and Abby organized this fundraiser themselves. They set up a yoga and pilates session, opened it to the community, and raised funds for ABSAR.

We’re incredibly grateful.

Thank you .yoga.antigua and , and to everyone who showed up on the mat. This organization runs on moments like this.

If something like this is in your mind, reach out.

ABSAR is sad to share the recent passing of Lee J. Sagert, volunteer to the SAR community here in Antigua and Barbuda for over a decade.
Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.

“Lee J. Sagert Firefighter, Paramedic, Rescue Technician, collegue, mentor, Friend.

Lee was a man of many talents. I met him when he first came to Antigua. He was excited to be on the island and eager to get to work. Like most of us in the world of Emergency Services, he thrived on the adventure of the job.
He volunteered with ABSAR over the years in Antigua and provided an invaluable service to the residents and visitors alike.
I remember an early rescue boat mission with him. We were cruising along the south coast of Antigua in a 1.5 m swell with about 12 knots of wind. He commented on how “rough” the sea was that day. My reply was “no, this is flat, I’ll let you know when I see rough”. Oh, and he was prone to sea sickness, but that never stopped him.
Recent years saw Lee working out of the Barbuda Ocean Club running fire, EMS and rescue calls. He was on just such a call when he suffered a major medical event. Care was immediatly provided by a team member, but he did not respond to the treatment provided. Lee died doing what he loved to do, what he devoted his life to doing.
Rest now my friend. Your watch is over.”

- Jonathan Cornelius, One of the Director’s of ABSAR

In a small island nation, help must move fast. Volunteer rescue teams fill the gaps that distance and limited resources create. When someone is missing at sea or injured in a remote area, the people who answer the call are locals trained to act with precision.
If you have ever wondered whether volunteers make a real difference, the answer is yes. Lives depend on it.

Meet one of our responders - Jamaul. Since he joined the ABSAR family back in April 2021, he has been nothing but consistently hard-working and commited to every task assigned to him. His qualities embody the dedication and commitment we strive for in our volunteers.

They do not ask for recognition. They show up because this island is home and someone has to be there when things go wrong. Know someone who would make a strong volunteer? Tag them.

Our Wilderness Search and Rescue Team is kicking off the year with our first training session. We’ll be sharpening the skills that matter in the field: moving through tough terrain, handling casualty evacuations, running effective radio comms, and a long list of practical tools every responder should know.

If you run, hike, climb, work in medicine, or just feel at home outdoors, you’ll fit right in. Training is open to anyone who wants to build real capability and support our mission. If you want to join us, send a message and we’ll add you to the group chat so you can get the details and link up with the team.
