Oh wow! We accidentally spilled about a cup of feed on the ground and out of nowhere these critters showed up to help us clean up. They must have smelled the molasses!

MORE THAN 30 YEARS LATER! A message from Antigua's Donkey Sanctuary Management Team:
!
The Humane Society first started bringing donkeys into the Sanctuary in 1993! At that time, we fenced the perimeter of the area and then gradually carved out interior paddocks, each approximately 5 acres in size, to make management and care easier. Our perimeter fencing remains in fairly good shape but the individual paddocks are showing wear and tear and we need to start replacing some of the fencing wire and posts.

From mid-December to the end of March we will have overseas volunteers on site who would be able to help Daren with fencing repairs but we need help to purchase the fencing wire and posts.

We have determined that we need six rolls of field fencing wire, tie wire, and twenty posts for a cost of approximately US$2400.

If you would like to help, please
(1) visit our website: www.antiguaanimals.com and use the Donate button to make a credit card donation or
(2) use our GoFundMeLink: https://gofund.me/447b712d or
(3) If you prefer to send a cheque, please make it payable to Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society (or simply “ABHS”) and mail it to us at PO Box 2052, St. John’s, Antigua

Thank you for whatever you can do to help and thank you for caring!

Happy Independence Day, Antigua and Barbuda!

Today, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and beauty of our nation — values we see every day in the gentle spirit of our beloved donkeys.

At The Antigua Donkey Sanctuary, we’re proud to be part of a caring community that shows kindness to all creatures, great and small.

As our flag waves high, let’s continue to move forward with compassion, unity, and pride — for our people, our animals, and our islands.

We never know what a day will bring at Antigua's Donkey Sanctuary. Today it brought more than 5 inches of rain from Tropical Storm Jerry - it's very muddy but all animals are fine. Yesterday it brought a distress call about a goat that had fallen into a very deep well at nearby Betty's Hope. We went over immediately and were able to locate the well and sure enough a very upset goat was trapped at the bottom, absolutely no hope of climbing out. As usual, Donkey Sanctuary Manager Daren to the rescue. The goat was frightened and therefore totally uncooperative so it took a while but eventually Daren was able to get a rope around the goat's neck and haul her out (without falling in himself). Initially we thought we would bring her in to join donkey-goat Rose but as soon as Daren was able to get the rope off her neck to release her, we discovered that a large flock of sheep and goats had been waiting for her (we think she is their leader) and they all headed home for the night as soon as she joined them.
A big thank you to the UK visitor who called us about the goat. The heavy rainfall today might have resulted in a very different ending.

Hey Friends!

Due to the weather, our office is closed today. Thank you for your understanding and continued support!

As many of you know, hurricane season — especially from mid-August through November — is one of the most challenging times for Antigua’s Donkey Sanctuary. Your kindness and support during this period means the world to the animals in our care. 🫶

Thank you in advance for caring!

Young people from an innovative summer camp called ACE (A Challenge for Everyone) visited us as part of a focus on caring for and respecting animals. The camp was founded by Her Excellency Karen Mae Hill, Antigua & Barbuda's High Commissioner to the UK. The age group was 8 to 19 years and approximately 75 young people descended on the Donkey Sanctuary - much to our delight!

This generous donation of over EC$30,000 from Island Resorts' fundraising initiative which concluded last week, not only honours Sir Robert Barrett's legacy but also significantly supports us so that we can continue to provide essential care and supplies for our lovely donkeys.

The contribution was collected by Karen Corbin, Executive Director of the Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society and Daren Wilson, our Donkey Sanctuary Manager.

This fundraiser is very touching for us. It highlights the power of community support and dedicated fundraising efforts. The donation will make such a meaningful difference in our ongoing efforts!

Gratitude is extended to Elite Island Resorts and all the contributors, whose generosity made this possible!

As anticipation builds for the upcoming announcement of the fundraiser winners, we encourage you to stay tuned here and to Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society's social media channels.

Your go-to resource for maximizing your bookings and unlocking fantastic rewards.

This, of course, is the time of summer camp visits. We are always happy to see the children and watch them interact with the animals as we take every opportunity to encourage empathy and kindness. The children from CGFI Summer Camp had fun brushing the donkeys and carefully inspecting the tortoises to see if they were male or female.😊
