Peace Camp - Day Four
On the fourth day, we visited Afghanistan Center for Memory and Dialogue at Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization (AHRDO). The center preserves, narrativizes and exhibits the memories and objects left behind from civilian victims of war to their survivors.
There, we also held a session with Ms Emina Frljak - Programs Coordinator at Youth for Peace. While sharing on the topic “Youth Perspectives on Importance of Dialogue”, she highlighted the role & significance of dialogue in peacebuilding, and how youth can use dialogue as a means to promote peace in their contexts.
As part of the workshop participants had an opportunity to listen to the story of Lejla Hasandedić and how dialogue helped her to overcome differences and start her interethnic and interfaith journey in a divided city of Mostar.
In “Principles of A Respectful Communications”, Mr. Frank Labitzke helped the participants understand how to achieve & keep good relationships even if we have contradictory positions and how to establish a “nonviolent way of communication”. The participants also learned that the map is not the land: first, try to understand, then to be understood; to gain respect by setting clear non-aggressive stop signs.
Finally, Ms Sylvia Murray, advisor at AYEPO, facilitated a session on Personal Peace Practice. She started with an overview of Peace Leadership and then spoke about the importance of personal peace practice, offering some practical “tools” for reflecting and building self-awareness on our personal peace practice.
There was also individual time in which the youth had personal reflection journeys to meditate, reflect, and write. Sylvia concluded the session with a guided meditation that helped everyone feel calm and relaxed.
