AYEPO organized a two-day Soft skills Training for a group of university students at Rahe Danishga Academic Center to improve their communication, team work, problem solving and decision making skills.

To begin, we had the participants practice authentic listening exercise - an opportunity to listen to each other’s stories and experiences without interpretation and judgment. Then, these dynamic girls learned how to work in teams, how to involve and encourage team members to contribute in decision making and resolving problems. They also learned that; individuals and teams can accomplish a lot when, collaboration, sense of belonging and friendship exists among them. In addition, the participants engaged in interactive activities pertaining to the topics whose benefits they can see in their personal/academic lives, and beyond.

The program is part of the "Transformative Social Leadership Training" supported by Euphrates Institute and implemented in schools and educational centers in Kabul.

Izatullah Munsif, head of the youth club at Nangarhar University's Peace Center and AYEPO Peace Camp Alumni, 2021 spoke about social peace at the Lincoln Center in Jalalabad.
Addressing the youth, he reflected on different areas of peace-building, particularly social peace and how that can be achieved and sustained.

He also highlighted the importance of personal peace practice in peacebuilding. In this interactive session, the participants also engaged in the discussion by sharing their views, comments and concerns.

We are grateful to AYEPO Peace Camp Alumni for seizing such opportunities to transfer the lessons learnt during the program to others, especially to fellow youth and the community.

AYEPO Peace Camp 2021 was a great opportunity for the emerging peacebuilders coming together from various parts of Afghanistan to connect with one another, forge new friendships, share stories and experiences, cook and eat meals together as well as to learn new skills and experiences that help them expand their peacebuilding works in their communities.

Peace Camp - Final Day

To start the day, Hussain Ali Karimi - program director at AYEPO - led an engaging session to instill the importance of leadership & communication skills, conflict management, team building, and problem-solving in peacebuilding.

In the afternoon, the emerging peacebuilders presented the culmination of their learning during the week by sharing their initiatives to transfer the knowledge and lessons learned to others in their communities. This is one of the most exciting aspects of our Peace Camp, as we witnessed our participants pitch their courageous visions for how their imagine peacebuilding impact will reach beyond the program. Each idea was creative and holds the promise of change. In the coming months, we look forward to see how these ideas and initiatives take off and unfold.

It was especially memorable to conclude this five-day program with participants performing their local music, dances, theater performances, poem recitation and certificate distribution.

We would like to thank the participants for their open heart, dedication and active participation in the program. We are also grateful to the trainers and facilitators, AYEPO team and volunteers for making this possible!

Peace Camp - Day Four

On the fourth day, we visited Afghanistan Center for Memory and Dialogue at Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization (AHRDO). The center preserves, narrativizes and exhibits the memories and objects left behind from civilian victims of war to their survivors.

There, we also held a session with Ms Emina Frljak - Programs Coordinator at Youth for Peace. While sharing on the topic “Youth Perspectives on Importance of Dialogue”, she highlighted the role & significance of dialogue in peacebuilding, and how youth can use dialogue as a means to promote peace in their contexts.
As part of the workshop participants had an opportunity to listen to the story of Lejla Hasandedić and how dialogue helped her to overcome differences and start her interethnic and interfaith journey in a divided city of Mostar.

In “Principles of A Respectful Communications”, Mr. Frank Labitzke helped the participants understand how to achieve & keep good relationships even if we have contradictory positions and how to establish a “nonviolent way of communication”. The participants also learned that the map is not the land: first, try to understand, then to be understood; to gain respect by setting clear non-aggressive stop signs.

Finally, Ms Sylvia Murray, advisor at AYEPO, facilitated a session on Personal Peace Practice. She started with an overview of Peace Leadership and then spoke about the importance of personal peace practice, offering some practical “tools” for reflecting and building self-awareness on our personal peace practice.
There was also individual time in which the youth had personal reflection journeys to meditate, reflect, and write. Sylvia concluded the session with a guided meditation that helped everyone feel calm and relaxed.
