Steam is sending some thank you kisses for getting the monthly food fundraiser finished! We've got $4000 in pledged donations coming our way, split between rent and salaries, and every bit gets us closer.

Over 25,000 meals are cooked each month by teams of cooks in our catering-sized kitchen. We feed hundreds of animals, including our own as well as providing food for people struggling to care for their own pets in this economy and a few precious people who help feed packs of stray dogs and cats. We’re so close to finishing the food fund for the month, and once we do we can turn our attention to rent and salaries.

It'll be in the 90s all week in Kabul, so our dogs will be celebrating water and, best of all, mud. The fountain you see here was one we installed this summer for about $200, and it really has made life more comfortable and fun for the packs of dogs who live there. Many of them will spend their whole lives with us, and we want them to not just live, but thrive.

Our rent costs are expensive this month (they vary by month, which I've explained in a hopefully non-confusing way before), but we're well over the halfway point now and we've got generous pledged matching donations coming to us as we hammer away at it. Our salary costs seem high, but coming in at just under $300 per month on average, they are just barely enough for our hardworking staff to support their families. Many support extended families, and they work outrageously hard to do so. We haven't yet hit the halfway point on those, and it's starting to induce heartburn.

I know that all of you are helping us in every way you can, and your voices are an integral part of that. Do you love what we do? Then please tell people you love about us. There is so often a hesitancy to seek donations from friends and family for one's 'own' causes, but if they are our own, and I believe this one is for all of us, then I think it's almost a disservice to not share. Good work is done in every place that horrible things happen, and that's nearly everywhere. We're one of many. So why help here? There aren't many animal welfare resources in Afghanistan and we are the ones saying yes. The burden of being the only one open at 2am for animals that need critical care is a huge one for our staff. They are tired. I am tired. You probably are, too. We keep asking for more help, and it's just plain hard on everyone. But we depend on you because so many depend on us. It's not that there is no safety net. It's that we are the safety net.

I will be on a plane in a few hours heading to pick up the life-saving medicine that you have so quickly and generously helped us fund. I wish our asks weren't always so huge, and with the scale and breadth of our work, it's almost unbelievable that we are largely funding still by personal donations, your personal donations. But we are. So let's bring this month home.

Lara's babies are growing into perfect little bunnies. They're still nursing twice daily, but soon will start nibbling on the same beautiful buffets that Lara has. Of our older bunnies, the two males are scheduled for castration this week, because as cute as baby bunnies are, we are delighted to have 6, but not 600. We are still short of the goal for our animal food fund, but not by much. And we're just a few dollars away from the next pledged match for salaries.

You make it possible for us to help animals like Lara. Without that help, we can't.

We got confirmation that the large order of FIP medications as well as the boxes of snap tests (for parvo and for FIP), the anesthesia, and the surgical sutures will be ready for pickup by Wednesday night in Dubai, meaning I can bring them back on Thursday morning. Most of the flights from Dubai to Kabul are ever so conveniently timed to leave between 1am and 5am, which really makes it impossible to function like a human the following day, but needs must! Given what is likely to be increased airport security here on August 26th, I'll try to fly over on Tuesday, less than 48 hours from now.

Why the rush? We've had another positive FIP case today (quite a lot are coming from clients who've gotten cats from pet stores, but not all) and we are running out of medication. FIP is such a rough disease and there aren't alternatives to the antiviral that is used to treat it. We are hoping that some of the cases we've caught very early might be good candidates for the 42 day treatment protocols instead of the 84 day more typical protocol, but we are in bad need of a restock either way and we're still over $5000 short of what it will take to pay our bill. The medication for FIP is expensive, but we can save so many lives with it, and they are worth the effort and the cost and the exhaustion.

I've got some happy cats highlighted here--the Brothers Karamazov and their adopted sister Pebbles. We can give animals wonderful lives here. But they have to be alive for us to do it.
